Prof. Matthew Apps
@brain_apps
Professor of Cognitive Computational Neuroscience. Head of @MSNlab. Motivation, decision-making & social cognition in human brains @TheCHBH @UoB_SoP @IMH_UoB
Delighted to have been promoted to Full Professor of Cognitive Computational Neuroscience @TheCHBH, @UoB_SoP as of 1st April. Thank you to all the students, postdocs, collaborators and mentors (especially @n_ramnani, @manos_tsakiris & @MasudHusain) who have made this happen.
🚨 New paper 🚨 Out in @CommsPsychol: "Manipulating attention facilitates cooperation" with Claire Lugrin and Christian Ruff We use gaze data and display manipulations in one-shot Prisoner's Dilemma games and find that these manipulations can drive choices through attention 👇
In a one-shot prisoner’s dilemma game, manipulating the location of payout information on computer screens changed participants’ gaze pattern sequences and resulted in greater cooperation when more focus was given to others’ outcomes. @arkadykonovalov nature.com/articles/s4427…
Final call to UK and international candidates (Closing date: 2nd March 2025)! Join us as Full Professor in Human/Cognitive/Translational Neuroscience with the opportunity to step in as (Co-)Director at the @TheCHBH 👇 edzz.fa.em3.oraclecloud.com/hcmUI/Candidat… please share
Thanks to all the people who've been so positive about my new book. It's about how neurological patients can tell us so much about our selves, how personal and social identities are forged by different cognitive functions, and what it means to belong.
3.5 year PhD studentship in cognitive computational neuroscience open in my @MSNlab, @TheCHBH @UoB_SoP, co-supervised with @LugtmeijerSelma & @littleneuro. Deadline 23rd March. Unfortunately only open to UK candidates. More details here: findaphd.com/phds/project/p… Pls retweet.
After a very successful experience last year, we are excited to announce 🚨 COMPUTATIONAL SOCIAL COGNITION SUMMER SCHOOL - 2025 🚨 We have a fantastic set of keynote speakers and lecturers - apply by April 18th here: compsoccog.com Please spread the word!
Announcing the second 'Computational Social Cognition Summer School' @unibirmingham and Uni. Leiden. Keynotes from @DianaTamir, @david_m_amodio & Matthew Rushworth, hands on tutorials and instruction from experts, and fun activities for a low price! compsoccog.com
💥I'm thrilled to announce that our paper "A reward self-bias leads to more optimal foraging for ourselves than others" is now published in Scientific Reports! 🧵Curious how self-bias shapes dynamic decision-making? Read it here: nature.com/articles/s4159…
Great job by our fantastic research assistant Kubra on this blog post out now in PsychologyToday!
Do we make better choices when it's all about us? 📣 Read our new blog for @PsychToday on a recent paper by Contreras-Huerta et al. (2024) written by @brain_apps and me. ✨ Special thanks to @lsebastian_ch, @thepsychologist, and @DrJoCutler ! psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/the-he…
I would be grateful for the retweets. Open PhD position in my group to look at using cognitive computational Neuro approaches to understand motivation.
Funded PhD (UK students only). Interested in a PhD working in @MSNlab, co-supervised by @froemero1? Topic is flexible around themes of motivation and decision-making, using techniques such as computational modelling, brain imaging, or brain stimulation. tinyurl.com/543ucffd

Do you struggle with the whole passion drive work narrative? Feel like not going “all in” means you won’t be taken seriously? You’re in good company. Check out my latest @guardian piece on why it’s okay to not love your job.
It's OK not to love you job. In fact, having multiple “contingencies of self-worth” – things you can turn to feel good about yourself when one aspect is going poorly – is the key to buffering yourself from stress. Great article from @TessaWestNYU theguardian.com/books/2024/oct…
Our paper on the Affective Gradient Hypothesis is now out on @TrendsCognSci! 🧠 ➡️sciencedirect.com/science/articl… For a short summary of how this theory originated and what it proposes, see this 🧵:
I'm very excited to share a preprint from a passion project I've been working on this past year! This came out of trying to work through two puzzles that have been bothering me for a while, and which are at the core of almost everything most of us study. osf.io/preprints/psya…
It's OUT! 🥳My first (shared) first author paper with @kim_doell, Madalina, @jayvanbavel and our 254 amazing collaborators is now published in @ScientificData Hope our dataset would be useful to many! Cant way to see the research that will come from it 🤩 nature.com/articles/s4159…
Our MindInMotion workshop happened yesterday tinyurl.com/yztc6z8d. Thank you to all delegates for the open cross-sector discussions on the future of neurorehab! @blamlab @uhammerbeck @ChiouChloe @Tnightingale10 @GaleaLab and many others @LES_UniBham @ncode_network
🚨PhD position available in Cognitive Neuroscience / Computational Psychiatry with us @ChariteBerlin funded by @dfg_public on mood-cognition interactions in depression, more infos here: karriere.charite.de/en/job-vacanci… Get in touch if you have questions about the position.
I’m recruiting PhD students for my (soon-to-launch) lab at Boston University! If you’re interested in the intersection of computation, learning, & development, please reach out. I’ll be at #Flux2024 and #SNE2024 and am happy to meet up. cldlab.org
Grateful to have received one of the British Academy/Leverhulme small grants with @jonroiser and twitter-less Essi Viding to examine explore/exploit decision-making as a transdiagnostic correlate of mental health problems!
