26 July 1856. George Bernard Shaw was born in Dublin. He wrote more than 60 plays including major works such as Man and Superman, Pygmalion (later turned into the musical My Fair Lady) and Saint Joan. He was also the 1st writer to win a Nobel Prize (1925) and an Oscar (1938).
26 July 1845. SS Great Britain sailed on its maiden voyage. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company’s transatlantic service between Bristol and New York City. It was the 1st iron steamer to cross the Atlantic in 1845.
