Exactly. The point of writing college essays is not the production of the essay itself (obviously!) but the reinforcement learning that the writing induces. If a student is willing to forgo that with AI, why even attend college?
Here’s what I don’t understand about use of AI in the liberal arts - I do understand that it can create term papers. Essays etc. But I don’t know what I think until I write it down. I learned to how think by learning how to write. That’s a lot of what college was for me.

If a plumber installs your shower, you don't get to pay him only when you decide to start using it. But freelance journalists have to wait for publication before payment. This can take months or even years. Totally unfair practice for workers that everyone treats as normal.
