For this scene in Goodfellas, there wasn't a script. Martin Scorsese's mother was simply told to behave like a typical mom, and the whole bit about her cooking a meal at 2 AM was entirely improvised by her.

My grandfather (back left) was a convoy relief driver into Bergen Belsen Camp at the end of WW2. What he saw shook and angered him, and he refused to talk about it, it upset him so much. I'd happily punch any Nazi-saluter in the face, in his honour.
