How do we trigger a fundamental change in steel, cement, & chemical production to net-zero that initially raises their cost, but drives global market share uptake while reducing costs to parity? A 🧵from 2 new reports, from @ColumbiaUEnergy & netzeroindustry.org
Heavy industry is a major hurdle in achieving global #NetZero CO2 emissions. A new CGEP report by @bataille_chris, @sstiebert, @JonasAlgers, Dr. Francis Li, and Margaux Alfare outlines strategies to incentivize investment in near-zero emissions industrial facilities. 🧵👇
Solar PV is about cutting the middlemen of (millions of years of) time and photosynthesis 🤣😉
People are starting to realize that China’s massive buildout of solar photovoltaics has nothing to do with climate change, and everything to do with tapping the resource that makes up >99.9% of Earth’s energy budget.
I'm reviewing global and specifically Chinese cement demand forecasts, and I'm very surprised how much demand has fallen from recent expectations. Demand hit a max in 2020 of 2.4 Gt, and has since fallen below 1.9 Gt, & yet in all the forecasts I can find demand >2.4 past 2030.
Hey @22_Minutes, you NEED this guy!👇
Early morning comedy .... This just made me LMAO 🤣 I don't know who he is but he needs his own show.
This is bonkers. A 1 Mt/yr direct reduction iron reduction facility using green hydrogen made with electrolysis "only" needs an islanded 1-2 GW solar field with good insolation to run 24/7, 365, and another ~350 MW in batch mode to run an EAF to make steel.
It is hard to get your head around how stupendously large an electricity user a 2-5 gigawatt data center represents. A 5 gigawatt data center consumes on the order of 40 million megawatt-hours of electricity per year, as much electricity as the ENTIRE STATE of Nevada or Kansas!
The really weird thing is this happening at the same time as solar has fallen to $0.043/kWh in 2024 (>$700/kW & maybe $0.06-0.07/kWh with 4-8 hrs of battery) & EVS are going below the purchase price of ICE vehicles.
