OPINION: California's Proposition 28 made a promise to students that all would receive more arts instruction with the help of guaranteed funds. But too many districts are not following the law. #caedu @createca edsource.org/2025/lets-keep…

A coalition of teacher unions, parents and former Los Angeles Superintendent @austinbeutner has accused @LASchools of violating the rules of #Prop28, a statewide mandate to increase spending for arts education. #caedu #caleg #capol edsource.org/updates/coalit…
Prop 28 funding is in addition to the amount schools would otherwise receive from Prop 98. It has no impact on any of the other budget issues in schools.
This measure passed right on the verge of serious school funding cuts. Arts are an important part of education, but what else will be cut more because of these constraints, if followed strictly?
The law says “every public school will receive increased funding for arts and music education “ and the funds are to “supplement funding for arts education…not to supplant existing funding.” Period

Families, teachers, staff and students in every school community should be asking “Where’s the additional arts teacher Prop 28 is meant to provide?”
