Works on quality, value, ideas of good, education, caste. Always on the lookout for good ethnographies.
Happening tomorrow, at Calicut University. Glad that we finally have such kind of conversations located outside of 'Delhi'. P.s: Poster is so pretty.

Though I get the idea of keeping presentations super short (12 minutes) many of us have to spend a chunk of our q and a - explaining the context/informing which makes the whole point of presenting pointless.
This is reductive and also an insult to the people who are moved to volunteer and campaign. Saying everything is- because it is liberal-dismisses how people feel. It is not easy to feel hopeful in the world we live now. So give them some credit too.
Zohran Mamdani is a classic example of a leftist becoming a liberal hero just based on his looks (and his wife’s looks too). It’s so easy to capture the poltical imaginations of liberals — just be a good looking person with just enough ‘woke’ opinions and they are in.
The food photos where we took second and third helpings are the best <3
Few glimpses from our two days’ workshop. It has been quite productive to think about region and Global South from Kerala. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed in various ways! We hope to bring out a collective reflection about the region in some ways.
What a low..
The 2013 film #Raanjhanaa is being re-released in Tamil Nadu with an altered AI-generated "happy" ending, a possible first for the industry that a heartbroken director Aanand L Rai terms "dystopian experiment" and producer Eros Media World describes as a "creative reimagining".…
Don't know if it is the academic stereotype of Kozhikode being a consumerist heaven, but my buying habits are erratic and wasteful in this city. Porotta (noolu, wheat, maida) has outdone all other purchases by far.
I have gone around touching surfaces to find mine !
losing ur glasses is so difficult.. because u can’t see anything without them, including your glasses - so you’re left eternally searching and wandering.. sad lyf scenes :/
Sudha's ethnographic films on Kozhikode are a must watch.
Nothing like when one gets to present a paper and a film, together at a conference. At the 42nd International Visual Sociology Association conference at Ajou University, South Korea, end of June. @VisualScholars
Wonderful! This book is a must read. I keep returning to it for the meticulous research and the creative/ attentive reading of archives.
Delighted to share that my book Contested Childhoods (CUP) has been awarded the @SHCY Grace Abbott Prize 2024. @RanaAnwesha @SaniyaPuri007 Thanks are due to everyone who helped me in this journey. shcy.org/awards/shcy-20…
The 300 words per day or fifteen minutes a day for the PhD thesis does not work for menwhen I am in a flow. What I end up doing is maniacal writing without remembering to eat or move.
Zumba dance in a school in Kerala. To reduce academic stress and improve mental wellness, Kerala has introduced Zumba dance in schools from this academic year. The final period of each day will also now be dedicated to sports instead of academic lessons.
First person accounts / memoirs require a certain kind of depth (not necessarily time but something more).Even if it is political (the book and its author), social media reflections cannot make the book a lasting reflection. It can at best be a primer.

This little and light life sketch of @JeanDreze in a children’s magazine is beautiful tribute to this Indian economist, among the finest we have had and a model of what intellectuals should be like. A compulsory reading for the trolls who write all kinds of nonsense about him.
This is a great list and I want to add that even if one does not have the space to be a public intellectual esp in these times, you can do what is possible in your own backyards. Be better to your students, mindful of your projections and learn to cede space.
Academic Conference Don’ts: I attended over a dozen panels at a major conference this week. Over the years, I’ve realised I’m listening not just to the papers—but also to how people take space in shared academic settings. Here is a personal list of red flags: • Don’t speak…
Watching the emails that I label as rejections in my inbox growing bigger than acceptances reminds me - how academia is about being rejected by everyone multiple times (supervisor, dept, potential employers, grant agencies, publcs). #tholkillabuttholpikum
