🚨 My book "In Our Interest: How Democracies Can Make Immigration Popular" is finally out today with @ColumbiaUP! 🚨 It tackles one of the biggest challenges today: How can we make freer human mobility between countries more politically sustainable? 🧵

Thermostatic public opinion again! The pro higher ed backlash begins! @akoustov @johnmsides chronicle.com/article/for-on…
In November 2024, I then predicted that Trump 2.0 would nudge Americans back toward pro-immigration views and that a hard crackdown would only speed the swing. I also warned Rs: the more the overreach, the faster the opinion would reverse. That aged well: goodauthority.org/news/trump-202…
The new Gallup chart just dropped—showing the biggest back-and-forth reversal in US immigration opinion in recent history. Trump 2.0 came in with a clear GOP edge on the issue, but half a year later, it has already vanished. Surprising? Not if you know thermostatic politics🧵
Absolutely! After sweating through recent work trips to Germany and Spain, I'm fully convinced that proper A/C is essential for people's well-being. Until Europe cools down—literally—I may have to skip visits between May and September.
Opinion: Britain and Europe need to get serious about air conditioning on.ft.com/44sxu1G
"Installing AC is bad for the planet" This might have been true when Britain's grid was mostly powered by fossil fuels. A new paper from @BritishProgress shows it isn't anymore and explains why installing AC could accelerate the shift to Net Zero britishprogress.org/articles/air-c…
NEW today: How engaging with ethical dilemmas can improve public debates and policy- making on migration And why ”myth-busting” is not enough - and sometimes misleading (esp. when the alleged ”myths” relate to issues that involve ethical dilemmas) - bit.ly/4lLEgWr
🚨New paper alert🚨 Excited to share our forthcoming registered report in The Journal of Politics @The_JOP ! In "Borderline Democracy?", @armenon_memorie and I ask: Do voters punish governments for curbing civil liberties to tackle salient issues like migration? 🧵👇 1/8
A Canadian man losing his Atlanta CEO job over visa issues may not strike you as even one of the top 100 worst immigration episodes of this administration. But it perfectly illustrates how dysfunctional our system is and has been even for the most productive workers born abroad.
BREAKING: MARTA CEO Collie Greenwood is officially retiring. The MARTA Board has just voted to accept the early termination of his contract due to "immigration and personal matters." Rhonda Allen, MARTA's Chief Customer Experience Officer, has been named as interim.
I used to use Pocket to save pieces from the web. What are people now using instead?
Would you like to work at CMR @UniWarszawski? We are currently hiring two post-docs and a PhD student interested in political remitting in Poland and Spain (post-doc and student) or news consumption and populism (post-doc) 👇 #Migration #Academic #Job migracje.uw.edu.pl/job-offers/
An interesting approach to a growing problem of AI research slop—I see the appeal! I do worry, though, that this is not selecting on the right metric. I want my students and others to use LLMs responsibly, and not to sign a pledge to handicap themselves from using modern tech
I am no longer chairing defenses or joining committees where students use generative AI for their writing statmodeling.stat.columbia.edu/2025/07/18/i-a…
Happy to be a part of this initiative @rootsofprogress and write about new policy solutions to common migration problems. More to come soon!
@akoustov is a professor of political science at @UNC He is also the author of a new book, "In Our Interest: How Democracies Can Make Immigration Popular." He is writing about immigration policy, politics and (de)population.
Some folks suggested turning my book into a two‑page policy brief. Can anyone recommend good examples on migration or other related topics? Self‑promotion is welcome! Any tips on where to publish would be appreciated too.
You won't hear about it because everything is focused on mass deportation, but the sound you're not hearing is 1 million of the highest paid, highest skilled people in America leaving the country because Congress refuses to fix legal immigration for literally anyone.
Now available! IN OUR INTEREST provides a new, optimistic perspective on the political prospects of pro-immigration reforms. buff.ly/vF9OH1x @akoustov #Philosophy #PoliticalTheory #PoliticalScience #Politics #Immigration #InternationalRelations #ReadMore #ReadUP
ok I'm reading UK climate adaptation papers and I feel like I've gone insane "There is evidence... air conditioning offers protection against the heat... However, there are disadvantages to promoting this... There may be equity issues in availability of air conditioning"
