In one of my conversations with @lolashoneyin last year, she spoke about how one of her goals for @akefestival is to make rockstars out of African writers, but that African writers had to move like rockstars as well. That was the first time I had the idea to go on tour.
Over the next month, I’ll be doing a book reading x signing tour, visiting Ibadan, Enugu, Abuja and Kaduna. But first, we begin with Lagos. I commit to discussing every hot take on the story or craft, so see you on the 31st of May 🥂

We’re greatly saddened to learn that Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o has joined the ancestors. A literary giant, Ngugi was an advocate for African languages and the power of storytelling. We’ll never forget his warmth, brilliance and generosity at @akefestival in 2016. Travel well, sir.

In 2013, a guy walked into @akefestival with a huge tray of fila. He was soft-spoken & generous. He gave me 2 fila for free, said he was selling out twice a day. That’s how fila became a thing—everybody was wearing one! Fila guy was a legend for the 5 years Ake was in Abeokuta.
