Burnett on helping his stepson get into the ILGA: "I don’t know of any family business that don’t — I shouldn’t say family business — but if your kids work hard... that’s what I work for, to promote my kids, help my kids if they do well." thedailyline.com/with-conyears-…
OK, my memory was a bit faulty. Here’s what Ald. Burnett told me: “I have no problem helping my mother,” Burnett said. “That’s my mother. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be here. … If I could get her Mayor Daley’s job, I would get her Mayor Daley’s job.”
Our hedge fund owners & management just laid off close to 10% of the the Chicago Tribune newsroom for no clear reason, in essentially the same breath as they offered $88 million to bring the show to Dallas 🙃
Today, @chicagotribune laid off five guild staff members in a roughly 10% cut to our newsroom. These layoffs underscore a sad but unsurprising failure of leadership by Alden Global Capital, our hedge fund owner, and local management.

Lizzie is a superstar and one of our most talented beat reporters. This is apparent to her colleagues, our readers and the many natl and local journalism orgs that have given her awards in the last several months. Self-sabotaging decision by Trib but a win for another newsroom
I don’t post on this platform anymore, but today is an exception. I’ve been laid off by the @chicagotribune. It was a joy working with so many amazing people in this newsroom.
A loss at the Tribune is a loss for all of Chicago. Such amazing staff who covered a wide variety of Chicago news. We need more reporters, not less. Shame on Alden Global Capital.

“We are facing a budget dilemma, but we can fix it,” Johnson said Wednesday. “We just have to have the political will … What I don’t want is this zero sum where we have to cut services and find these so-called efficiencies that end up leading to closures.”

That’s it. Congress has officially killed federal funding of PBS, NPR and local stations across the U.S. after decades of thwarted attempts.
At Cook Co Dem slating, former Chicago Ald Howard Brookins seeks 2-year term on MWRD. “I know a lot about crap. I was an alderman for 20 years.”
At Q&A, Mayor Brandon Johnson calls for “a more enriched conversation around how local control over progressive revenue streams can meet the demands of this moment.” He says in follow-up he means giving the city power to pass taxes that would normally go thru state legislature
Over the weekend @lizzie_kane17 reported that Ald. Walter Burnett, 27th, was a candidate to lead the CHA (chicagotribune.com/2025/06/28/bra…). Now @jus10chi reporting he's weighing that AND MAYBE a Congressional run if Danny Davis' seat opens up: chicagobusiness.com/politics/walte…
Very proud to formally announce a new role I've taken on at the @suntimes: national political reporter. I'll be reporting on the Illinois congressional delegation, federal elections, the Trump administration and beyond.
Yes, I retired today from @chicagotribune I enjoyed my 27-plus years at the paper! The Trib team remains strong! Keep reading!
Ray Long, an icon of Chicago and Illinois journalism, walked out the door for his last day. Anyone living in this state should appreciate his dogged reporting and aggressive fight against corruption. Please salute my friend and colleague.
Oh, No! Ray Long is, indeed, The Franchise! A spectacular reporter, and the definition of integrity in Journalism. I've been learning from him, and his work, since the early 1980's. And he is such a great person in so many ways. Chicago and the Tribune are losing a superstar.

With a buyout window opening this week, our newsroom's managers are nowhere to be seen and haven't directly communicated a word. Our members have a lot of questions, and we won't accept this treatment from our leaders. @SCMitchP and @pjurik need to say something.
