#OnThisDay 23 Jul 1894, Sir Norman Stronge born. Decorated WW1 hero- first soldier mentioned in dispatches after 1st July 1916. MP and speaker for the NI House of Commons. Hugely respected across the aisle. Lord Lieutenant of Armagh. Murdered in 1981. He was 86 years of age.

A piece well worth a read by Mick Fealty (by no stretch of the imagination a closet Orangeman!) shorturl.at/Bwc7X . As an Orangeman & Loyalist I find myself buoyed by the media onslaught. It has been partial and 90% manufactured grievance. The reasonable have seen that.
#OnThisDay 22 July 1957, equestrian statue of Field Marshall Gough blown up in Phoenix Park Dublin. Limerick born, Gough rose to Commander-in-Chief of both China and India, led numerous successful campaigns, and was described as 'An illustrious Irishman'.

#OnThisDay 19 July 1922, Ahascragh Church of Ireland, Galway, destroyed by fire. It was the latest in a list of attacks against the small Protestant community in the greater Ballinasloe area. The local Priest condemned the arson and on-going attacks as ‘the work of demons’.

#OnThisDay 17 July 1871, John Miller Andrews born in Comber. Second PM of Northern Ireland. Active Orangeman in Comber White Flag LOL, and served as County Down Grand Master, Grand Lodge of Ireland Grand Master, and Imperial Master of the worlds Orangemen

The GAA is NOT a 'normal' sporting organisation. It is OVERTLY political. As a member you agree to support, promote & strengthen a 32 County state. Almost half of its members who died during the insurgency here from 1968 to 1998 were Irish Republican terrorists!
#OnThisDay 16 July 1922, the small Protestant community of Miltown-Malbay in County Clare begins the clean-up after its church is burned. One of many Protestant churches burnt that year. Heads down go down further...

Observation of all NI commentary atm: being a @JoeBrolly1993 seems to be the way to go. 'Commentators' have embraced the arrogant ignorant self-righteous bigot brollyite type persona. Not least @squinteratn. All trying to out-brolly the brolly! The brolly is no. 1 at it though!!!
#OnThisDay 13 July 1803, Ogle Gowan born in Wexford to famous Orangeman Hunter Gowan. Rose through Orange ranks to Grand Secretary before emigrating to Canada. Became a prominent politician and newspaper magnate, recognised by many as the founding father of Canadian Orangeism.

#OnThisDay The sash of my Great-Grandfather William Acheson. The Silk (print) & material (rich purple velvet) indicates it mid/late 19thC, and as such is also highly likely it is the ‘sash my great great grandfather wore’

#OnThisDay 12 July 1691 (OS), Williamite forces prevail at the Battle of Aughrim. The decisive Battle of the Williamite War in Ireland- the Jacobite’s defeated with thousands deserting. Galway and Limerick would surrender soon after.

#OnThisDay The IRA War of Independence was non-sectarian seemingly... Arthur Ward's home attacked, his wife dies. A wild coincidence that the attack on Cork City's last prominent Orangeman came in the early hours of the 'Twelfth' isn't it! Arthur Ward, Royal York Orange Lodge 983

#OnThisDay 11 July 1920, eve of the 'Twelfth'-‘Cat Fort’, Cork City, the Ward family are told to leave their home. Then destroyed by fire. It was the home of Arthur Ward. The last County Grand Master of the Cork Orange Institution. His wife died in the immediate aftermath.
