Award-winning author of 32 books, including First Blood, which introduced the world to Rambo. 18 million copies in print translated into 30 languages.
Looking for a gripping page-turner to take on your summer vacation? Consider MURDER AS A FINE ART, the first in my Victorian mystery/thriller series, featuring the notorious real-life English personality of the 1800s: Thomas De Quincey. davidmorrell.net/books/murder-a…

The road to making FIRST BLOOD was rocky. Numerous directors & actors signed on, then off, and snowstorms delayed shooting for months. In THE RAMBO REPORT, author Nat Segaloff devotes a fascinating chapter to the making of the film based on my debut novel that introduced Rambo.

New paperback editions of my novelizations for RAMBO II and III are now available from Vinegar Syndrome. Only 1500 copies of each. The covers resemble paperbacks of the golden age. A package of two paperbacks includes a headband. vinegarsyndrome.com/collections/fr…

Condé Nast, publisher of THE NEW YORKER, VOGUE, and VANITY FAIR, has slid from dominance to decline. EMPIRE OF THE ELITE: Inside Condé Nast, the Media Dynasty That Reshaped America, a new book by New York Times correspondent Michael Grynbaum explains the many reasons why.

I became a private pilot for research about my novel THE SHIMMER (about the mysterious Marfa lights in Texas). On one of my flights to various places, I took this photo of the majestic Monument Valley.

“Mysterious lights, an isolated research facility, and characters as real as your next-door neighbor elevate this techno-thriller into a masterpiece of suspense.” —James Rollins davidmorrell.net/books/the-shim…

Really looking forward to this special event to launch @JackCarrUSA's CRY HAVOC. Hope you can join us on October 5.

I enjoyed writing about three iconic superheroes for Marvel, starting with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE CHOSEN. My six-part comic book series explored the emotional and physical cost of being a super warrior who has battled never-ending enemies since 1941. davidmorrell.net/books/captain-…

Pretty cool that TwoMorrow's books focus on comic book history & more. “Our mission from the beginning has been to create a lasting record of a unique American art form,” says John Morrow, who also creates magazines about comic book & pop culture history. publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/in…
Johny Carson, king of late-night tv, once impersonated Rambo wearing an exaggerated muscle suit and carrying weapons in an 8-minute comedy routine on THE TONIGHT SHOW. I had fun writing about it in my forward to Nat Segaloff’s informative new book, THE RAMBO REPORT.

If you’d like to see interviews of what I talk about at conferences, please go to the VIDEOS page of my website, davidmorrell.net. There’s a PBS interview, two conversations with my author friend Jack Carr, and more. davidmorrell.net/videos

Jigsaw puzzles are a favorite. We always have one going. They create order out of the world’s chaos. Puzzlers might enjoy THE PUZZLE MASTER, my story about a couple who find creepy clues while working on a puzzle. It’s in the PLAYING GAMES anthology edited by Lawrence Block.

While changes between books & their movies are inevitable, I love FIRST BLOOD, directed by Ted Kotcheff and based on my debut novel. It seems more realistic w/each year because its action scenes don’t use computer effects. The realism of the stunts is amazing.

There’s also a new edition of my novelization for RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II, for which I wrote a foreword, and a package of the two paperbacks with a headband. Only 1,500 copies of each. vinegarsyndrome.com/collections/fr…

A new paperback edition of my 1988 novelization for RAMBO III is now available from Vinegar Syndrome. Only 1,500 copies. I wrote a foreword, explaining the turmoil behind the movie production. vinegarsyndrome.com/collections/fr…

Another great author has left us. Martin Cruz Smith died at the age of 82. A Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, he wrote GORKY PARK (1981). A police procedural set in Moscow during the Cold War, it occupies a major place in thriller literature. usnews.com/news/best-stat…

Loved F1, the new racing movie starring Brad Pitt. It's what I call a “movie-movie.” Brilliantly photographed. Every frame is radiant. Racing has seldom been depicted this well. The audience loved it. The movie won't look this good on a home screen.

My debut novel, FIRST BLOOD, introduced Rambo. He was inspired by real-life Audie Murphy, a World War II hero who became a movie star in Westerns. Nat Segaloff has a great sidebar about Murphy in his new book, THE RAMBO REPORT: FIVE FILMS, THREE BOOKS, ONE LEGEND.

I enjoy researching my books. For TESTAMENT’s outdoor scenes, I took a wilderness-survival course from the National Outdoor Leadership School and lived for five weeks in the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, often above timberline. Here’s a photo. davidmorrell.net/books/testamen…
