Rare (inert) Great War grenades for use aircraft-to-aircraft. Once, chatting to the late Mike Saffery, grenade guru, sat in his smoke-filled study surrounded by such exotica, I enquired about the elusive No 4, to be told “that’s the one I get asked about most”. Well, got one now!

The brick walls of Hangar 3 still stand, hopeful of future rejuvenation. The remaining original hangar brick rubble piled up in the centre. We as a community encourage the owner to continue with the restoration, especially as Listed Building Consent was approved over a year ago.

8 July 1838, Graf von Zeppelin (d.1917) born. 1858 to 1890, served in armies of Württemburger & Imperial Germany. Devoted rest of life to creation of rigid dirigible airship for which his surname's a popular generic term. 100+ Zeppelins were used for military operations in #WW1.
Today is the anniversary of a Gotha bomber raid over London in 1917 that killed 57 people. Aircraft from 37 Squadron intercepted them, but pilot 2nd/Lt John Edward Rostron Young (19) and Airman (2nd Class) Cyril Charles Taylor (observer) were killed, remembered on our Memorial.
The Gotha bombers were the reason why the Royal Family had to change their Saxe-Coburg-Gotha name to Windsor.
7 July 1917, fourth raid of Operation Türkenkreuz occurred with 22 German Gotha bombers attacking the East End & City of London in daylight, killing about 60 people & injuring some 200. About 100 British planes sent to intercept, shooting one down & damaging three others. #WW1
