It’s not every day we have Albert Seba’s ‘Thesaurus’ (1734-65) out on display, but when we do it’s a real treat as they are crammed full of the most beautiful and intricate images, including this not-so-little rhinoceros scarab!

Prideaux John Selby was born #OTD in 1788. In his "Illustrations of British ornithology", publ. 1833, the birds are depicted life size. There are two volumes, one for land birds and another for water birds. Here are just a couple of examples, including the now extinct great auk.

#Artist Frederick William Frohawk was born #OTD in 1861. He provided many illustrations for ZSL's scientific publication "Proceedings of the Zoological Society". These frogs accompany a paper "Remarks on specimens of Rana arvalis exhibited in the Society's menagerie".

Today is #WorldSnakeDay we are featuring a garden tree boa with cassava, sphinx moth & treehopper from Maria Merian's insects of Surinam, 1726. More about Merian as a herpetologist: zsl.org/news-and-event… We are closed today (Wednesday) but will be open again tomorrow as usual.

#OTD in 1842 WC Cotton in New Zealand wrote to Richard Owen with evidence showing Owen was correct about the giant moa, a large, extinct, flightless bird.
