I'm absolutely whipped. One more day with a few guys and the metal will be on, and then I'll hopefully never have to be up here again.

A friend stopped by and was impressed by the joinery. He asked if it was some kind of Japanese technique. No, it's all traditional American joinery. Here it's a step lapped rafter seat at the eaves. Great lines.

Got the guys around to help finish the raising. Just need to button up a few things and start on the roof decking. All traditional materials; stone, brick, wood. New England bank barn built by an amateur homesteader type. All bartered, too.

Added a half wall for a post that supports a long span. Wanted it to be high enough to keep sheep in, since they'll winter down here.

This homemade boom mounted on tractor forks is how we raised some of the heavier 8x8s up to the top of the barn. Chain hoist hung from the end. Works good.

If we were Amish we'd have the roof on, but happy with what we got done today.

Just drove by a neighbor who was out brush hogging the chervil that had grown up so high it was impeding the line of sight merging onto the state road. The State hasn't got around to mowing here, so the local man does what has to be done. A small thing, but important.
16' rafters before and after. Got 16 pairs done, so the barn is all cut, just waiting on raising.

A view from Old Vermont, where the town road passes under a 200 year old Barn's high drive.

To tide over my lack of tweeting, here’s a neat RUCA (Rural Urban Code Area) map, source in replies. Data is 6 or so years old, but I think it generally hold well
Don't really know what the stock market is up to, I've seen clearing a hillside to plant with hundreds of black walnut and chestnuts. That's where my investments are.

Lucky to know one of the greatest nut collectors around. Probably 600 top-quality Chinese and American hybrids sourced from all over the country. $150. Ready to plant in the next few weeks!

Laying in bed sick, heard the dog barking endlessly. She had a mink cornered in the chicken coop, and I flushed it out. It's great having a proactive rodent-getter. She's up to 4 woodchucks, 5 squirrels, and now a mink.
