South Park was never really controversial in any way that mattered. It was only perceived that way via leftover Moral Majority pearlclutching over gallows humor & "shocking" moments. In terms of social commentary it wasn't transgressive; if anything, they'd try to play it safe.
It's bad when even things like Reddit and Morty are edgier and are willing to do more ‘controversial’ things than South Park.
