I do not think evidence should be evaluated based on whether it hurts or helps a particular cause, no matter how righteous that cause is. I understand that many people cannot weight evidence, thus making OP rhetorically effective, but I think that we can do better.

They don't want you to mention the hostages, because they want to pretend that Israel has no legitimate reason to be in Gaza. And yes, the hostages should be mentioned first, because their release is the precondition necessary to end the violence.
