The most ordered object at V&A East Storehouse: an X-ray of Balenciaga’s 1954 balloon-hem dress. Though known for avoiding corsetry, the image reveals hidden boning and hooping, showing his innovative approach to structure and silhouette. Beauty meets science.




This tapestry replica of ‘July’ from Charles Le Brun’s 1668 series shows Louis XIV hunting with courtiers amid symbols of power & wealth. Made by Jean de la Croix’s workshop, it adapts royal designs for elite clients, keeping the grandeur without gold threads.




Gearing up for the final race 🚴♂️ Channel 4 was the only television company in the UK broadcasting this famous cycle race. The text of this poster' Blood Sweat and Gears' puns on the well-known phrase 'blood, sweat and tears', referencing extreme exertion.

Paws for thought 🦁 These three lions at the V&A Silver Gallery are 19th-century electrotype replicas of 1660s originals by Ferdinand Kyblich at Rosenborg Castle. Made by Elkington & Co., they’re stunning examples of early masterpiece preservation. Find them in Room 89!

Silk footwear in the 18th century reflected elegance and status. Women’s shoes featured curved heels, pointed toes, and silk uppers with detailed floral motifs. Intended for indoor use only, they fastened with cut steel buckles. Outdoor wear required practical leather boots.



Scenes from literature inspired many modern British painters. Charles West Cope’s 1848 painting L’Allegro illustrates John Milton’s 1632 poem, showing Euphrosyne, goddess of Mirth, turning away and covering her ear to reject the advice of love- “so buxom, blithe and debonair.”




A candid moment of joy, captured 88 years ago by Lucien Aigner. Titled Bastille Day, it shows a sailor and his companion dancing in the streets of Paris on July 14th, France’s national day, honouring the 1789 storming of the Bastille. What story do you see here?

The art of heartbreak. 💔 Francis Danby’s first exhibited painting, Disappointed Love, became one of his best-known. A heartbroken woman sits in a melancholic pose, with a bonnet, shawl, torn letter, and a lover’s portrait beside her, symbols of love lost.




What’s the ultimate sweet treat? 🍫 Anya Hindmarch’s clutch reimagines the iconic Cadbury Dairy Milk bar with purple sequins, embroidery & wit, turning chocolate into couture. 💜

Gourd-geous!✨ Kate Malone’s Snow Lady Gourd blends nature and science in luminous white crystalline glaze. Inspired by fruits & veg, her playful forms and atomic-like details show why she’s a true master of UK ceramics.

Game, set, match! 🎾 The Wimbledon Ladies Singles trophy, held by icons like Billie Jean King, is a replica of a 16th-c. design by François Briot. Made in 1864 by Elkington, it's based on a cast from the Louvre and crafted using silver deposition. The V&A holds a copy too.


Ingrid Pollard, pioneering Black British photographer and ABP founder, challenges cultural stereotypes in her Self-Evident series. Portraits of black men and women in the English countryside, each holding objects linked to the Afro-Caribbean diaspora.
