Dr Olabisi Akinlabi (McKinnon lab) concluded the MMID postdoctoral fellows research seminar series tell us about her fascinating work understanding the interaction between vaginal bacterial microbe and clearance of Human Papilloma Virus to decrease risk of cervical cancer.

Dr Titus Olukitibi (PDF in Fowke lab) presents his work on HIV in Manitoba in collaboration with Sunshine House and also his community engagement activities with BIPOC youth in Winnipeg.

Dr Mariana Herrera Diaz (Rueda Lab) presents in the MMID postdoc seminar series her work on biomarkers of TB and STI in Colombia and Canada.

Dr Hannah Wallace (Kindrachuk lab) presents her MMID postdoctoral fellow seminar on cell death and viral pathogenesis.

In a MMID seminar series focused on postdoctoral fellows, Dr Carmine Slipski (Bay lab) presents his work on the development of a new diagnostic test for detecting periodontal disease that is associated with poor health outcomes.

Dr John Schellenberg, assistant professor in MMID, presents his innovative and exciting work on establishing a Syphilis training program.

Congratulations to Dr Julie Lajoie who was awarded a Manitoba Medical Services Foundation grant and the Kerry Bittner communication award on April 16th. Well done Julie and appreciation to MMSF for funding early career investigators at such crucial part of their careers.


MMID’s own Dr Julie Lajoie presented in MMID seminar today about the role of sex hormones in susceptibility to infectious diseases and the importance of research that addresses sex differences.

MMID welcomes Dr Angela Rasmussen from VIDO/U of Sask who presented her fascinating work on the origins of SARS-CoV2 virus.

Dr David Alexander from Cadham Prov Lab and MMID presents with Christopher Graham on antimicrobial resistance in mycoplasma which is a very important issue in TB in Manitoba.
Elinor Shvartsman (supervisors Dr Kelly MacDonald and Paul Sandstrom) did a great job defending her PhD on the role of Gardnerella in bacterial vaginosis. Elinor is in the MD/PhD program. Congratulations Dr Shvartsman!!!!

Dr Alicia Berard, from UM dept of Obs & Gyne, presents to MMID on the role of bacterial vaginosis in reproductive health using local cohorts.

Dr Denice Bay was rockin’ it at her presentation on the “Death Metal” copper and its role in controlling bacterial infections, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in hospitals.

Dr Zulma Rueda presents at the Manitoba Women’s HIV and Health symposium held at the Bannatyne campus today. This is an amazing symposium presenting the current HIV situation in Manitoba and pathways to solutions.
