Language Processing Lab @ UChicago
@UChicagoLangLab
We work on sentence processing, experimental semantics and pragmatics, and experimental syntax. PI: Dr. Ming Xiang
Glad this is coming out! It's a heavily revised and updated new spin on a now-ancient first edition (2013, by Dickinson, Brew, and Meurers, Wiley): a welcoming, accessible introduction to NLP from the perspective of linguistics. 1/
We accepted "Languages and computers" by Markus Dickinson, Lelia Glass, Chris Brew & Detmar Meurers #tbls langsci-press.org/catalog/book/4…
NeurIPS acknowledges that the cultural generalization made by the keynote speaker today reinforces implicit biases by making generalisations about Chinese scholars. This is not what NeurIPS stands for. NeurIPS is dedicated to being a safe space for all of us. We want to address…
Very proud of this work with Sanghee Kim @Sanghee__Kim
Work with @UChicagoLangLab on processing appositive (ARCs) vs. restrictive relative clauses (RRCs) is out: doi.org/10.1111/cogs.1… ARCs typically contain side-commentary info; does a distractor in an ARC lead to an absence of agreement attraction effect? (1/8)

What does it mean for language comprehension to be “good-enough”? With @rljfutrell, we present a computational formalization of model of shallow and deep processing using rate-distortion theory in our new #CogSci2024 paper: arxiv.org/abs/2405.08223 (1/n)
Glad this is out in preprint! Active use of latent constituent representation in both humans and large language models. Many thanks to my wonderful collaborators Wei Liu and @NaiDing789! arxiv.org/abs/2405.18241
How far the implicit learning account can go? Check out our new paper (with @rljfutrell) accepted to #CogSci2024 @cogsci_soc : "A hierarchical Bayesian model for syntactic priming" Preprint: arxiv.org/pdf/2405.15964
Chamois now has all standard features needed for regular reading experiments. We've tested it and are now using it in production with a TRACKPixx3 tracker. Data looks super clean. github.com/tmalsburg/cham…
Six UChicago faculty members have been newly elected to the @americanacad, one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies. These scholars have made breakthroughs in fields ranging from linguistics to fundamental biology. Learn more: ms.spr.ly/6011YKi7S

At a time when many are struggling to find ways to talk constructively to each other about conflicts occurring both in the U.S. and abroad, LSA is launching a new initiative focused on language, conflict and peace-making. lsadc.org/content.asp?ad…
Very happy to announce the publication of Eszter Ronai (@linguisticsNU) & Ming Xiang's new paper "What could have been said? Alternatives and variability in pragmatic inferences" in Journal of Memory and Language! authors.elsevier.com/a/1idTA_,1j5AB…
[email protected] - help us out by flooding Kent’s VC with emails. Linguistics has been suffocated over years by university marketing strategy we have no control over. Despite everything we’ve produced the best students who have gone on to do PhDs at the best depts in the world.
With what limited personal impact I have, I have emailed the VC of the University of Kent to raise my concerns and disappointment about their plans to shut several departments, including philosophy. I strongly encourage other scholars and friends of the humanities to follow suit.
Interested in doing cross-linguistic comparisons using eye-tracking 👁️? Come do a 4-year postdoc with us! We are looking for someone fluent in Spanish and/or German 📅 Application deadline: March 1, 2024. More info: linguistlist.org/issues/35-369/
