Had a great time speaking about “The Year That Made America” to the staff and volunteers at Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Saturday. Thanks to Ranger Tim for wearing his Minuteman hat to introduce me! Great audience!

I’ve been doing book talks this week about “The Year That Made America” and the Declaration of Independence. Great audience feedback! Next up is a presentation for the staff and volunteers at Fort McHenry in Baltimore.

If trees could talk! The iconic “Burnside Sycamore,” located next to the Burnside Bridge at Antietam National Battlefield, is one of the “witness trees” from the Battle of Antietam in September 1862.

Very much enjoyed this talk with @vetstrategies

Pennsylvania Memorial at Gettysburg - July 3 - 162nd anniversary of the battle

Just in time for the Fourth, another great review! - “This is McMillan’s best work. Die-hard historians will love his deep analysis. Casual observers will appreciate his debunking of historical myths…this should be on your reading list.” 🇺🇸

Start your Independence celebration with us on Thursday night, July 3, as we talk with author Tom McMillan about how the 13 colonies moved toward declaring independence—what led to it, what nearly stopped it, and why July almost wasn’t the month. His new book is The Year That…
The tombstone of Esaias Culp was hit by cannon fire during the Battle of Gettysburg. His son, Wesley, who grew up in Gettysburg, fought for the Confederates and was killed in the battle. Another son, William, was a Union soldier but was not at Gettysburg.

Should the 2nd of July be Independence Day? John Adams thought so. Check out why Adams misjudged history; why no one signed on the 4th; and why some words on the Jefferson Memorial weren’t written by Jefferson. Fun facts found in The Year That Made America 🇺🇸

Podcast partner John Banks and I honoring the curmudgeonly citizen-hero of Gettysburg, John Burns, on the 162nd anniversary of the battle. At age 69, local resident Burns grabbed his musket and told the Confederates, “Get Off My Lawn.”

First shot marker, Battle of Gettysburg, 162 years ago today

I highly recommend this book and the author! Both are fantastic!
The reviews keep rolling in! “Compelling”… “Perfectly paced”… “Deeply researched”… “A fresh and introspective perspective”…check out my new book on the political struggle that led to the Declaration of Independence. Just in time for the Fourth!
Hadn’t been there for a while, so we attended the daily 10 am flag raising at Fort McHenry today. Always an amazing experience with audience participation. Informative ranger talks on the War of 1812 battle in Baltimore and the Star-Spangled Banner.
