The height of stupidity is to think of the human world as a succession of 'events' rather than as a total process, an 'unfolding', comprising multiple overlapping processes that we try to fix and interpret as events because it is easier for us to manage.

Four tasks. Reconstruct social cohesion within clear boundaries. Detach the nation from the drag of external obligations. Rebuild the economy on new technology and global export. Restructure the welfare state for long term sustainability and maximum efficiency. Keep it simple.

What is to be done? Perhaps progressives and the liberal left need to be allowed to exhaust themselves in attempting utopia. Perhaps reality can only break through when that process has come to its natural conclusion. Meanwhile the 'future' quietly organises ...

The Left has another problem. It is made up of movements and not 'cadres'. The movements are of disparate special interests each of which demands that its interest be central to a rainbow policy programme. Yet those it claims to speak for are atomised. Activists are not the mass.

This may be the problem with the Left. It has developed dysfunctional ideals that are disconnected from emerging reality and has lost the ability to analyse that reality objectively and develop viable means to achieving liberatory ends within that reality.

Some of Labour's analysis is correct, certainly that we and they are victims of massive Tory ineptitude under successive Prime Ministers, but Labour response is disconnected and incompetent in turn. If it does not get a grip, we are talking serious national meltdown.

This is the challenge for Reeves. She has to stop a market melt-down, she has to pre-empt the IMF, she has to set the conditions for growth and she has to stop the street exploding from mounting rage. Throwing money at the military-industrial machine is not going to help her.

Left-wing sentimentality about illegal migrants alongside Government incompetence in dealing with very real problems that are emerging will eventually combine to destroy the liberal Left in this country. This is a crisis, second only to our dire economic situation.

There are three categories getting confused - violent attacks on migrants as people, legitimate peaceful protest at local conditions and criticism of the clearly inept migrant policies of the Government. The two last are freedoms to be defended. The first must be cracked down on.

Police are apparently setting up a unit to monitor social media 'anti-migrant' discourse. This is the sort of thing that, if mishandled, could inflame tensions even further. Fear of the State will eventually end up as ridicule of the State. We are close to that now.
