I am deeply grateful to one of the world’s leading scholars of #Africa & global development, @DrStephenChan, OBE, Professor of World Politics & twice former Dean of @SOAS, for his professional solidarity & friendship in response to a recent slanderous personal attack against me.
Regrettable that in some Africanist circles differences of opinion cannot be expressed civilly without calling into question a scholar's work or bona fides. Such was the case of a recent scurrilous attack on @DrJPPham. Whatever one may think of his politics, there is no denying
Writing in @thehill, #Togo🇹🇬’s Foreign Minister @rdussey makes the case for the #USA🇺🇲 to strengthen strategic ties to #WestAfrica against common threats from the #Sahel, presenting his own country as “a cornerstone of regional stability” to count on. thehill.com/opinion/nation…
What does the @MYANC-led regime in #SouthAfrica🇿🇦 expect after it repeatedly undermines #USA🇺🇲 foreign policy & national security interests, propagates a blood libel against #Israel🇮🇱, coddles #Iran🇮🇷, etc.? Kudos to @POTUS & @SecRubio for standing firm & keeping #AmericaFirst.👊🏻
The Trump administration is treating South Africa almost like a pariah, blacklisting its envoys, refusing to send top-level officials to meetings it hosts, and threatening to hit it with such high tariffs that its economic crisis is likely to deepen. bbc.in/455lYJE
It was a pleasure to meet with the President of Taiwan @ChingteLai. Today’s agreement marks a milestone in our growing partnership. We are proud to work alongside #Taiwan in advancing maritime security, the blue economy, and shared democratic values. A new chapter begins.
Glad to welcome FM @min_abdirahman & the #Somaliland delegation to #Taiwan. With today’s coast guard agreement & expansion into areas like maritime security & blue economy, our nations are writing a new chapter in our partnership & showing resilience of democratic alliances.
Delighted to meet diplomatic team from Eritrean Blue Revolutionary Front. I know Isaias regime is apoplectic over this opposition group which seeks a democratic Eritrea. Having been in similar group while Hungary was under Communism, I hope their goals come about like ours did.

Trump must stop countries like #Cameroon from its attempts to terrorize Cameroonian and #Ambazonia dissidents on U.S. soil. From my latest in @dcexaminer: Cameroon is the latest country to turn its sights on its American diaspora. President Paul Biya is 92 years old and is…
African nations have insisted on being treated as equal partners, not supplicants. Trump Admin has done that by cutting aid dependency in favor of commerce. Now African states will have to use resources for basic services to people, and not elites taking it all! About time!
Disturbing article by @mrubin1971 highlighting how dictators around the world go after their opponents no matter where they are. Eritrea and Cameroon are recent entrants on that shameful list. US needs to act against such breaches of our sovereignty! washingtonexaminer.com/restoring-amer…
Honored to present flags to Ambassador Troy Fitrell on his retirement from leading State Department Africa Bureau. Ambassador Peter Pham was one of several distinguished guests at ceremony. Ambassador Fitrell did a superb job with many accomplishments. So sorry he is leaving!

On July 21-22, representatives from eleven leading #Ethiopian public universities came together for a workshop focused on strengthening alumni engagement as part of the Public Universities Autonomy initiative. Participants from each university shared insights and experiences…
With Somalia again losing ground to al-Shabaab it makes no sense to get into a violent confrontation with its own Jubaland regional state. When will a true Somali leader emerge to give the nation what it most needs: honest, effective, skillful government? barrons.com/news/clashes-b…
What a reversal! Nigeria is now importing oil from the US instead of vice-versa! Not long ago Nigerian oil was Africa's most valuable export to America. The shale revolution has really changed the dynamics; thanks to Texas Tech University. reuters.com/business/energ…
So Museveni is giving himself a new title for upcoming elections (coronation). "Ssemalungu" has several meanings but he obviously wants to remind voters of his bush war victories. This joins several other titles he's claimed in the past. Wish he'd pick "former president" next!
Trump admin has achieved real results with DRC/Rwanda and is now addressing Sudan. Also need urgent action to bring various Ethiopian sides together to prevent a new conflict erupting among Ethiopian Fed Govt - Tigray factions - Eritrea with no winners! theafricareport.com/388438/summer-…
The UK recently gave the Chagos Islands, home to an important US military base on Diego Garcia, to Mauritius, and now a senior Chinese delegation visits. Beijing would be thrilled to see the US forced out of the Diego Garcia base, and is no doubt working assiduously to that end.
On 15 July, Vice-chairwoman of the CPPCC National Committee Qin Boyong met with DRC President Felix Tshisekedi and PM Judith Suminwa Tuluka in Kinshasa. The two sides agreed to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation across various fields.
Great for US SecState Rubio to be talking with Ethiopian PM Abiy. America is keenly interested in preserving regional peace. With war drums again beating, renewed conflict - especially involving Ethiopia and Eritrea - would be beyond disastrous for all. state.gov/releases/2025/…
If the Cameroonian people were really clamoring for 92 year-old dinosaur Biya to run for Prez again, would 81 eager candidates apply to run? Of course it's all meaningless - who believes the regime will actually allow a real election? Has it ever? africanews.com/2025/07/22/cam…
Another step forward for peace in the eastern DRC. @SenateForeign Chairman @SenatorRisch commends the signing of a declaration of principles between the DRC and AFC/M23 in Doha, urging all parties to remain committed to dialogue and putting commitments into action.
The Qatar-mediated Declaration of Principles, signed by the Congolese government and AFC/M23 with support from @POTUS and @SecRubio, advances efforts to end the deadly conflict in Eastern DRC. Ongoing violence reinforces that implementation and accountability is critical for all…
So the U.S. has already conducted 51 air strikes in Somalia this year targeting Shabaab. Sorry but no war has ever been won from just the air. Until Somali ground forces can win and hold territory, it’s a wasted effort. How many $ has U.S. wasted on Mog? defenceweb.co.za/african-news/u…
Eritrea/Northern Ethiopia/Tigray-about as objective a report as possible on this highly complex and combustible situation. Bottom Line - the absolutely last thing the region needs is a rekindled conflict immaterial of who starts it and who the sides are. dw.com/en/a-look-at-e…
