This week a scallop dredger has been scraping what remains of life from the seabed inside a so-called Marine Protected Area around the Isle of Rùm. (footage shared by a concerned islander) 🧵
As David Attenborough shines a light on the damaging effects of bottom-trawling in his new film Ocean, trawl industry lobbyists have dismissed it claiming the film is "propoganda", "one-sided" and full of "Hollywood tearjerker techniques".
👏🏻🤷🏼♂️👇🏻 “…The current system simply is not working,” argued Alistair Carmichael, MP for Orkney and Shetland. “Proper enforcement of the current rules ought to be the bare minimum.”

David Attenborough’s Ocean film has sparked backlash from parts of the fishing industry — led by the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation. Why? Because it shows the environmental reality of bottom-trawling. Read our response here: openseas.org.uk/news/david-att…

Sadly this is happening all around our coast. The government continues to delay protections for our inshore waters. If you're concerned about this please consider contacting your MSP: openseas.eaction.online/restore-the-in…
This scallop #dredger continues to plunder these waters. This is 'meant to be' an #MPA. Designated in 2020, 5 years on & it's nothing more than a paper park/tick-box exercise for @scotgov. Zero protection!! @ScotGovFM @MairiGougeon @TheOpenSeas #inshorelimit

Would restricting bottom-trawling in England's offshore MPAs hold a silver lining for the trawl fleet? Via @YourFishingNews

"18.7% of the Danish sea area is designated as trawl-free zones. [It] is the largest protection of the seabed in Denmark to date and puts an end to bottom trawling in approximately 1/3 of the area affected by trawling in the internal Danish waters." 📖: mim.dk/nyheder/presse…
