Had a good conversation with Jon Sumrall this morning. Will have a story later. On conference realignment: "I like our league. I know this: I'd much rather be a have in our league than go into a league and be a have-not. Because good luck trying to win if you're a have-not."

Important news: Ryan Silverfield began his response to my question at his presser by saying, "As you know, now, being a Memphian..." Don't know when I crossed the threshold, but I'm honored.

Ryan Silverfield: "The winner of this conference, without a doubt in my mind, should go to the CFP."

Ryan Silverfield is now at the podium at American Conference media days. He says Brendon Lewis, who is also here, has not been named starting QB. "Brendon knows he's in a quarterback competition."

UTSA QB Owen McCown: "First and foremost, I didn't ask for any of that information. Based off my little emoji reaction, you could see it caught me by surprise, what happened. Like coach said, the information was completely irrelevant."

UTSA coach Jeff Traylor on the Memphis playbook leak: "I think it had no bearing on the game whatsoever. I didn't know anything about it. (QB Owen McCown) didn't tell me anything about it."

Pernetti on the Memphis-UTSA leaked playbook story: "There's really not much to this story...Some of it has been sensationalized." He says Jeff Traylor and Ryan Silverfield will address it.

Tim Pernetti on Memphis wanting to leave: "I was very aware of the conversations." "I understand Memphis' ambition. I think other schools have that ambition. I admire their ambition."

Tim Pernetti says the American will start player availability reports this season. It will be a "gameday" reporting system, Pernetti says.

American Commissioner Tim Pernetti throws out an idea: Bring all college sports media rights deals together like pro leagues. He says revenue could triple. "I've seen the potential upside of consolidation."

Not surprising, but Pernetti says he's against any CFP format that includes conference autobids.

Pernetti is talking about last season, when Army was set to play Marshall in a bowl game before Marshall pulled out because of transfers. "What the hell are we doing?" Pernetti says there should be one portal window and one-time free transfers (without sitting out a year).

Pernetti: "We have to avoid the lazy branding that if you're paid, you're professional."

Tim Pernetti on the House settlement: "It's not perfect. It's not flawless. It's a step towards modernization, which this industry desperately needs."
