‘StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty’ released in the U.S. on July 27th, 2010 (15 years ago today). The sci-fi RTS sequel from Blizzard has had a number of expansion packs since launch & has been free-to-play since 2017. It sold over 3 million copies in its first month.


On July 26th, 2009, ‘Wii Sports Resort’ released. This sequel to the pack-in title for the Wii in 2006 was the first 1st party game to support the “Wii Motion Plus” accessory & was packed in with the game. It sold over 33 million copies & was the 3rd best selling Wii title.

July 24th, 2001 (24 years ago today) marks the release of ‘Max Payne’ on Windows. This Neo-noir 3rd person shooter from Remedy mirrors elements of Norse mythology, John Woo films & bullet-time effects from ‘The Matrix’. It was ported to PS2/Xbox later that year.


‘MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat’ released 30 years ago today (7/24/95) on MS-DOS. This vehicle simulation game developed/published by Activision was later ported to PC, Mac, Saturn & PlayStation. The game was well-received, selling over 500,000 units in its first 3 months.

‘Jagged Alliance 2’ released on July 23rd, 1999 (26 years ago today). Despite the number in the title, this tactical RPG is the 3rd title in the series. The game did well on sales and reviews amassing over 300,000 units sold, although it did poorly in the United States.

Who misses the glory days of “Summer of Arcade” on XBLA? ‘Splosion Man’ was one of the more popular titles on that platform & it released today in 2009 (7/22/09). This 2D-ish platform used explosions as its jump mechanic & was popular enough to sell half a million copies.

July 21st, 2010 (15 years ago today) brought ‘Limbo’ to Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade. This puzzle platform had a monochromatic art style & minimal audio, which gave it a creepy vibe. It was later ported to other consoles & was the 3rd highest selling game on XBLA that year.
