Measuring urine calcium in patients with hyperparathyroidism can help to predict the risk of developing kidney stones. Kidney (renal) ultrasound can identify silent kidney stones. #CheckYourCalcium #PAM2025 @TheAACE @ParaTroupers1 @TheEndoSociety

You Don’t Need to “Watch and Wait” Forever Tired of watching your high calcium levels and hoping it gets better? Parathyroid surgery is the only cure for primary hyperparathyroidism—and it can be life-changing. @AAES surgeon finder can help. buff.ly/ajDv0nf #PAM2025

Parathyroid surgery can protect your bones! Osteoporosis increases the risk of bone fractures—especially in older adults. If you have primary hyperparathyroidism, having a parathyroidectomy (surgery to remove the overactive gland) can lower your risk of fractures. #PAM2025

Is Your Surgeon High-Volume? Why It Matters. When it comes to parathyroid surgery, experience makes a difference. 🔹 High-volume surgeons perform at least 30–50 parathyroid operations per year. 🔹 They have higher cure rates and fewer complications. buff.ly/e8Ir6Hn
Familial Hypocalciuric Hypercalcemia (FHH) is a rare genetic condition that causes high blood calcium but very low urine calcium. It’s caused by a change in the calcium-sensing receptor gene, and it can look a lot like primary hyperparathyroidism—but it’s not the same! #PAM2025

🧬 Did you know primary hyperparathyroidism can sometimes run in families? Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN) is a group of rare genetic syndromes that affect multiple hormone-producing organs and nearly all patients with MEN1 develop primary hyperparathyroidism. #PAM2025

🧬 Is Primary Hyperparathyroidism Hereditary? In most cases, primary hyperparathyroidism is not inherited—meaning it doesn’t run in families. Many patients have no family history of the condition and no involvement of other hormone-producing glands. #PAM2025 #CheckYourCalcium

Primary hyperparathyroidism was first described in the 1930s. Patients had high calcium and severe bone/kidney complications. Since the 1970s we measure calcium routinely on blood tests and discover this disease much earlier! #CheckYourCalcium #PAM2025 @ParaTroupers1

International Parathyroid Awareness Day! This day commemorates Sir Richard Owen's birth in 1804. He is renowned for his discovery of the parathyroid glands in the Indian Rhinoceros back in 1852. #CheckYourCalcium #PAM2025 @TheAACE @ParaTroupers1 @TheEndoSociety

Primary hyperparathyroidism impacts about 1 in every 1,000 males and 2 to 3 in every 1,000 females. It predominantly occurs in individuals above the age of 50. #CheckYourCalcium #PAM2025 @TheAACE @ParaTroupers1 @TheEndoSociety

Did you know parathyroid glands don’t always stay in their usual spots? Sometimes, overactive glands are found in ectopic locations—like the chest, behind the esophagus, or even inside the thyroid! Advanced imaging can help track them down before surgery. #PAM2025

Parathyroid cancer is very rare—seen in less than 1% of people with high calcium and PTH levels. But when it does occur, it often presents with: 🔹 Very high calcium (often >14 mg/dL) 🔹 Extremely elevated PTH 🔹 A large parathyroid tumor #CheckYourCalcium #PAM2025

Some patients with primary hyperparathyroidism have all 4 parathyroid glands enlarged—this is called hyperplasia. In these cases, surgeons often perform a subtotal parathyroidectomy, removing 3.5 glands and leaving just enough tissue to keep calcium levels normal. #PAM2025

High PTH with low vitamin D? Sometimes, high parathyroid hormone (PTH) isn’t caused by a parathyroid tumor—it’s your body compensating for low Vitamin D. This is called secondary hyperparathyroidism. Your doctor may recommend Vitamin D supplements and recheck #PAM2025

Surgeons use scans before parathyroid surgery to find hidden glands and plan a successful operation. Radiolabeled 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT has limited availability but may be useful for finding hidden glands that can't be located with other scans. #PAM2025 @Paratroupers1
