The grumpy hero in rom-fic seems to be an all-time favourite. But if your hero is grumpy, let him be grumpy for a few scenes at least. Sure, he’s going to turn out to be a nice man, but he shouldn't appear to be friendly/kind/soft-spoken/understanding in the very first meeting.
