Most of the trainees are being paid by PI CIHR grant in Canada. However, in the two latest competition awarded grant were cut by 23% across board. This makes it incredibly difficult to do the research and be able to increase the stipend for the trainee.
🚨 New correspondence in Nature! 🚨I argue for bigger increases to CIHR investigator-initiated grants, because bigger operating budgets = better stipends for research trainees across 🇨🇦. nature.com/articles/d4158…
Scholarships for graduate trainees went up in the last budget and it is time!! But without a significant increase in operating funding there is gonna be an important gap between trainees. We all recognize it is essential to increase stipend for trainees but funding need to match.
Dear @PierrePoilievre: The Trudeau govt only addressed the tip of the iceberg in supporting biomedical research. While increased student stipends are vital, a greater impact for all lies in boosting CIHR project grants. See my @Nature article for more: nature.com/articles/d4158…
The funding disparity for research trainees is even worse in Quebec, where students face greater financial struggles, as highlighted in @LP_LaPresse. nature.com/articles/d4158… read more: lapresse.ca/actualites/edu… @FRQS1 @CIHR_IRSC
