Common Poppy Papaver rhoeas Cailleach dhearg Often seen growing along roadways & parks. This one peeping out from behind the trunk of a tree here in the #LiffeyLinearPark Currently plentifull in nearby cornfields & quite common on disturbed or “waste” ground. #wildflowerhour

Snowberry Symphoricarpos albus Póirín sneachta Pink funnel-shaped 5 petalled flowers from June. Followed by clusters of round white berries. This plant is introduced & considered invasive. Its oval leaves are a larval foodplant of the Death's Head Hawkmoth. #WildflowerHour



Wonderful group out on Tuesday evening tackling some weeds etc. around "Sentinel", Buckley's Cross roundabout & traffic islands. A task we tend to tackle twice per annum - on this occasion it required a considerable effort by our volunteers. Litter was picked out the Naas Rd.

The success of this summer’s #NewbridgeInBloom in generating a warm & welcoming atmosphere has been the subject of much favourable comment - these planters are along #BallymanyRoad Thanks to all involved in the maintenance & deadheading the display. #ItsEasy2MakeADifference

Variable #Damselfly Coenagrion pulchellum Goirmín luaineach Frequents vegetation near freshwater lakes, fens, ponds – in sheltered unshaded areas May/August. Translucent wings & black dot near the tip & a blue line between blue spots behind eyes. Male to the top, female below.

Common Red Soldier Beetle Rhagonycha fulva Moltán Rua Adults are requently observed on plants & flying near long grasses during July & August; They feed on small insects & aphids; Red soldier beetles are valuable pollinators & are attracted to nectar & pollen; #Biodiversity



Cinnabar Moth Tyria jacobaeae With its black & amber coloration this #caterpillar is commonly seen – often on ragwort from July onward. They extract & retain poisons from #ragwort & are immune to the poisons, however this makes the caterpillars unpalatable to most bird species.



Mute Swan Cygnus olor Eala bhalbh Ireland's largest bird & one of the heaviest flying birds. They forage, eat water plants, graze on land & feed on small amphibians, snails & insects so please don’t feed them bread it can make them ill. Female is called a Pen; male is a Cob.

Bittersweet Solanum dulcamara Fuath dubh A native plant AKA Woody Nightshade Grows through hedgerows with purple flowers with a bright yellow central column. Flowering June-September. Poisonous, particularly the oval berries. Apologies for poor quality photo #WildflowerHour


Water Forget-me-not Myosotis scorpioides Ceotharnach uisce A perennial native plant - grows on wet ground, this one beside the River Liffey. Small 5 petaled blue flowers, with a yellow & white centre, blooming May to October. #WildflowerHour


Great Mullein Verbascum thapsus Coinnle Muire A native species, can grow quite tall generally flowering from June to August. Its attractive flowers are yellow & its leaves are covered in hairs. #WildflowerHour

Selfheal Prunella vulgaris Duán ceannchosach A native perennial plant flowering June to August, with purple, blueish-violet flowers & paired leaves on a somewhat hairy stem. Loved by bees & moths & found in grassy areas. #WildflowerHour

Lady's Bedstraw Galium verum Bolach cnis A native perennial plant with clusters of small bright yellow 4 petalled flowers blooming from June to September. The stems have narrow leaves appearing in whorls. #wildflowerhour

🚯 Kildare County Council were delighted to welcome the Gum Litter Task Force roadshow to Newbridge this week. The key message from the campaign is always remember to “Bin your gum when you’re done"!🚯

Ragwort Jacobaea vulgaris Buachalán buí A native plant, flowering now in many locations & will continue to flower until November. They can grow quite tall, with clusters of attractive yellow flowers. Larval food plant of the Cinnabar Moth - however none seen. #WildflowerHour

Hoverfly Epistrophe grossulariae Flight period end June to September, with males predominating in June and females continuing on into September. Tends to visit white umbellifers, not seen very often in recent years. Spotted alongside waterway.
