In a recent pres to a #VaLeg committee, Dir. Patchett laid out what expiration of enhanced premium #ACA tax credits could mean in #Virginia 😢 100k losing coverage 😢 Monthly premiums jumping up 30%-50% Fed. lawmakers can still act to extend the credits sfac.virginia.gov/pdf/Jt%20Sub%2…

Many are teeing this up again. We're all for flipping our #UpsideDownTaxCode to help people afford the basics. But why pick & choose which low-paid workers benefit? There are more effective & targeted tax choices, e.g. #EITC, #CommonwealthKidsCredit wvtf.org/news/2025-06-1…
The U.S. House’s bill “aims to: - increase admin burden - cut critical $ needed to operate programs - terminate millions of people’s vital benefits - impose new & strict work reqs - punish states that attempt to fill the gaps to protect communities.” richmond.com/opinion/column…
As House Republicans work to advance their bill to the floor, their agenda couldn’t be clearer: stripping health care & food assistance away from millions & raising families’ costs— while showering ever larger tax breaks on the wealthiest. My statement: cbpp.org/press/statemen…
Qualifying for Medicaid "gave me one less thing to worry about. I knew that I could go to the doctor, I could get my health screenings" Now, due to Trump's bill, Katina and hundreds of thousands in Virginia no longer have that certainty re: #HealthCare richmond.com/news/local/gov…
“Listening isn’t just a step on the path to change. It is the work.” Read @AshcKenneth's interview with Fund for Shared Insight about how centering impacted people makes policy work more relevant & powerful and how funders can show up to really listen. fundforsharedinsight.org/viewpoint/ashl…
“I cannot proceed w/ hiring or renewing a contract without knowing when I’m going to have the funds,” said the #EnglishLearners supervisor for Roanoke City district TCI has signed onto a letter to demand funds be restored so that every student can thrive. edweek.org/teaching-learn…
New summary of key impacts from the reconciliation bill. ⤵️ For #Virginia families who need help accessing health coverage and healthy food, the changes are alarming. But it’s important to remember that most changes won’t take effect right away. thecommonwealthinstitute.org/tci_research/v…
There is important work ahead, and your voice matters! Join the #FundOurSchools Coalition (@FOS_VA) for an in-person town hall in Richmond on July 15. Learn more about state & federal school funding policy and share your perspective on public school funding issues!

There's no way #VaLeg or advocates can fully fix what Congress has broken, but there's vital work ahead. We look forward to working w/ community leaders, legislators & other advocates to meet the basic needs of #Virginia families & build a better future. thecommonwealthinstitute.org/tci_news/tci-s…
Have you taken time for yourself lately? Twice a year, Team TCI takes a collective break to rest and recharge. We’ll be out of the office for a week and return on Monday, July 7. #RestIsResistance

Immigrants, with & w/out documentation, play vital roles in our communities and economy. Our new report (bit.ly/at-risk-virgin…) highlights the harm that forcibly removing community members en masse can have on our economy & key industries in #Virginia h/t @ImmResearchIRI

While the richest in Virginia would get huge tax handouts, people w/ the lowest incomes would see an average $100. Many may also lose their #HealthCare. “Would you rather have health care or $100?" @FreddyMejiaVA asked. "The clear answer would be access to health coverage.”

Medicaid helps keep people healthy enough to work or care for others. Work requirement proposals add paperwork to what most are already doing and take away #HealthCare from many, making it harder to be healthy and go to work. Make it make sense. thecommonwealthinstitute.org/tci_research/l…
BREAKING: @TCIFiscal releases report on the devastating impact of the House GOP’s bill, calling for “Congress [to] reject these harmful choices and instead work to strengthen programs like Medicaid and SNAP that strengthen our families.” thecommonwealthinstitute.org/tci_research/v…
We've summarized key #HealthCare, food assistance (#SNAP), and tax impacts of the bill that House leadership pushed through. But to sum it up even more: It's not good. Take action today: bit.ly/protect-medica… thecommonwealthinstitute.org/tci_research/v…
When you're already paid too little to afford private health insurance, a new co-pay could become a barrier to accessing #HealthCare. More from TCI's Freddy Mejia on one of several U.S. House-passed bill provisions that could keep people from getting the care they need ⤵️
Always grateful when I can chat with @FreddyMejiaVA to help me understand health care policy. Check out his break down of how Medicaid copays could go up under the big Republican bill now with the Senate:
"This disastrous bill would mean that hundreds of thousands of Virginians lose access to health care & food for their families...many more will see their health costs go up," said TCI's @AshcKenneth We urge people to contact their Congressmembers thecommonwealthinstitute.org/tci_news/state…
The House GOP plan would exclude an estimated 87,000 U.S. citizen & lawfully residing children in Virginia from the #ChildTaxCredit by requiring both parents (if married) to have an SSN for their child to get the CTC. Taking funds from kids is not okay. cmsny.org/publications/n…
