Growing up, D. Wayne Lukas was a towering figure. He owned the Triple Crown series and his ‘99 near-miss with Charismatic remains a cherished memory. Cheering him on as the years passed and he refused to quit and seemed instead to defy time has been a joy. RIP to a true legend.

NYC Dem Mayoral Primary: Neighborhoods with highest nonwhite %:

On the Thursday before the Derby, Wayne Lukas told me to be at his barn before dawn. He pulled up in his pickup around 4:30, gave his team their instructions and then rode his horse out onto the track. I stood at the rail and he came over and spoke for 45 minutes about his life:
“I don’t think I’ll retire as long as I can beat these guys.” 89-year-old Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas isn’t thinking of retirement any time soon.
I’ve deeply admired D. Wayne Lukas’s competitiveness and peerless work ethic. And when he let me spend a morning with him last month, I learned about his generosity of spirit and wisdom. Just awful news. God bless him. horseracingnation.com/news/D_Wayne_L…
