In the latest work from our lab, we find reduced cortical representations of phonemes during speech perception in middle-aged adults. See 🧵👇 for more details!
🧠👂🏼New findings from @SoundBrainLab reveal that middle-aged adults w/ normal hearing show reduced neural distinctiveness for speech representations. Could this indicate early cortical changes linked to hidden hearing loss? biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Evidence of cochlear neural degeneration correlated with reduced phoneme distinctiveness in middle-age but doesn’t fully explain age-related neural dedifferentiation. Project led by @zcguo81 @JacieMcHaney & @AravindHearing #SpeechPerception #Aging #HearingLoss #AirPodscantfixthis
Using EEG and neural networks, our study shows phoneme encoding is less distinct and recruits broad neural resources in middle-aged adults. The less distinct phoneme encoding persists even when controlling for peripheral hearing and acoustic processing ability.

Looking forward to presenting at the Advances and Perspectives in Auditory Neuroscience (APAN) meeting in Chicago this October! @apanhearing

Awesome first day at the FFR workshop! Lots of current and former SoundBrain lab members in attendance. We took a lakeside stroll at lunch—just missing a few key members (including @bchandra_nu!)

Fantastic keynote lecture at the FFR workshop by Rachel Reetzke (another SoundBrain lab alumna!) on the utility of the FFR in autism

SoundBrain Lab alum @nikegnanateja gave an excellent talk this morning on multichannel methods for high quality FFRs at the 2024 FFR workshop in Chicago

I’m recruiting PhD students in my Computation, Learning, and Representation lab in Psychology @UofNH to start Fall 2024! Info at roarklab.com and feel free to reach out if you’re interested in applying. Come study perception, language, and learning in beautiful NH!
@PurdueSLHS at @LifeAtPurdue are excited to invite you to a special event featuring one of our most Distinguished Alumni, @bchandra_nu at @NU_SoC. We would be delighted to have you join us for Dr. Bharath Chandrasekaran's talk. Please attend on Thursday, 11/2, in LYLE 1160.
Save the Date! Join us for a talk from Dr. Peter Narins, the 2023 recipient of the Hugh Knowles Prize for Distinguished Achievement. High-end Audio: Neuroethology of Ultrasonic Communication in Amphibians
ICYMI: In September @bchandra_nu was named the Ralph and Jean Sundin Endowed Professor in CSD and Chair of the Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Check out his research @SoundBrainLab and soundbrainlab.northwestern.edu !
Our lab is hosting a mini-symposium titled "Speech processing in challenging listening environments: Towards a multi-dimensional framework" on August 25th at @NorthwesternU. Join us!

Inviting submissions for a special issue of Brain and Language that I am guest editing with @bchandra_pitt and @mhamptonwray , titled - Neural systems underlying speech processing in challenging listening environments: a multidimensional framework sciencedirect.com/journal/brain-…
Exciting news from my end! Starting September 2023, I'll be the new Professor and Chair of the Roxelyn and Richard Pepper Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. @NU_SoC at Northwestern University.
Last, but not the least, my wonderful lab and trainees @SoundBrainLab @JacieMcHaney @krsitek @FllanosLinguist @CaseyRoark @nikegnanateja @theNEW_ashley Olivia Flemm, who were a big part of the Pitt Science journey #NewBeginnings #innovation #breakingsilos #CSD #Comminication
Our lab is looking forward to moving to Northwestern University this summer!
Looking forward to this new adventure at NU! @SoundBrainLab will be moving and there will be several new opportunities in the department and the lab that will be posted soon!
