Congratulations @JamesSteeleNano and team!
My first lead author paper is now live @ChemMater! We solve the structure of the first desodiated phase in NaxNiO2 (x=2/3) via X-ray and neutron diffraction, solid state NMR, and DFT/AIMD. Ni charge- and Na vacancy-ordering play an important role! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ac…
🎉 Congratulations to Xiaotian Zhang on his first paper! At the start of his PhD I think he hadn't ever done a Rietveld refinement before, and now he is a pro at multi-phase magnetic refinements! Read all about TbTaO4 here: doi.org/10.1039/D4MA01… @SianEDutton @montu_saxena
Our latest experiment was the cat's μ! We just wrapped up in-/ex-situ μ-SR on EMU @isisneutronmuon ! We're looking into sodium dynamics in the phases which form when NaNiO2 is electrochemically cycled, and could even measure whilst dis/charging thanks to the BAM cell!
📢 Happy to share our paper on low-T structure and magnetism of Ba3Tb(BO3)3, out now! Thank you to all coauthors, especially @SianEDutton. Work done at @DeptofPhysics, @psich_en and @isisneutronmuon ⚛ doi.org/10.1103/PhysRe…
The first paper from my PhD is now available @ChemRxiv! We solve the structure of the first desodiated phase in NaxNiO2 (x=2/3) via X-ray and neutron diffraction, solid state NMR, and DFT/AIMD. Ni charge- and Na vacancy-ordering play an important role! chemrxiv.org/engage/chemrxi…
It's the most wonderful time of the year... By which I of course mean the @SscgR ECR and Christmas meetings! Thanks so much for the opportunity to give a talk and poster presentation on our work which should be coming to @ChemRxiv soon. Happy Holidays all!
Congratulations Camilla
Congratulations to our PhD student Camilla Tacconis for winning the poster prize at #MATSUS24 @nanoGe_Conf 🥳🔋👩🔬🎉

Our latest work is out in JACS! For anyone interested in Jahn-Teller distortions, displacive transitions and LiNiO2's cooler sibling NaNiO2, check out our "scientific tour de force" (thanks reviewer 1)! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/ja… How might JT impact electrochemistry in NNO...? 👀🔋
NOW OPEN! Winton 2025 Cambridge-Berkeley Exchange Programme 📅 Deadline - 13 Dec 2024 Partnership between the Winton Programme for the #Physics of Sustainability & @KavliENSI at UC Berkeley - supporting #research within the fields of these 2 programmes energy.cam.ac.uk/news/open-wint…
When you wish upon a high flux neutron diffractometer... you get to see low intensity superstructure peaks! (At least at the WISH instrument @isisneutronmuon) Thanks to the team experimental Farheen, Liam, @SianEDutton and the wonderful instrument scientists Fabio and Pascal!
Great to collaborate with @saines_408 and team on this work. @DeptofPhysics
Fondly remembering my days as a PhD student after publishing in Journal of Solid State Chemistry for the first time in 15 years this nice piece of work lead by my first two PhD students @FalsapernaMario and Richard Dixey. doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc….
Exciting times at the @isisneutronmuon Roadshow @cardiffuni! Many cool talks and interesting experiments to consider. Thanks to the organisers for putting on a great event, and giving me the opportunity to talk about novel structural solutions in Na(1-x)NiO2 phases!
Just returned from a wonderful week @ILLGrenoble D4, where we measured magnetic diffuse scattering (mPDF) in candidate magnetocaloric materials. In lieu of our usual instrument photograph (no photography in the reactor!) Fiamma and I took advantage of the cool virtual tour!

Excellent talks and training sessions @FaradayInst #ECR2024! Very excited to share my work on structural evolution in NaNiO2 cathodes, including our new structural model for Na(2/3)NiO2!
Amazing week @isisneutronmuon Muon Training School! Thanks to the organisers, speakers, and scientists for great talks and hands-on experience with the μSR spectrometers! Delighted to have won the prize for best talk, my new Muon pal and etched schematic of ISIS are the coolest!
