Established 1993, the University of Sheffield's #NLProc Group is one of the UK's largest natural language processing research centres.
Interested in how LLMs process idioms? Stop by our talk today! 📍Level 1 1.61 🕑 14:00-15:30 (28/07) #ACL2025NLP We'll be presenting key findings from the shared task we organised, where we extend idiomaticity understanding to VLMs: 📍Hall M2 🕚 11:00 (31/07)
Heading to #ACL2025NLP this weekend? Don’t miss the amazing work from SheffieldNLP! Check them out & come chat with us in Vienna! 🇦🇹👋📰

Pietro Tropeano is visiting us from Copenhagen this summer and he gave a great tutorial on LLM compression @SheffieldNLP seminar today 🗜️🪚
Excited to share that I'll be attending ACL '25 to present our work: Rolling the DICE on Idiomaticity: How LLMs Fail to Grasp Context (Joint work with @NafiseSadat and @AlineVillav - couldn't have done it without their support and insights!) 📰: arxiv.org/abs/2410.16069 🧵
Heading to #ICML🇨🇦! Had a great time at ACL2023, excited to visit again. I’ll be at Poster Session 6 East (Thu, Jul 17, 16:30) for RULEBREAKER, and Poster Session 2 East (Tue, Jul 15, 16:30) for our position paper on model editing. Perfect timing to grab a drink afterward🍹🍷🥂🍻
Reem presenting the paper now. Hope the screen is big enough to see her slides!
We'll be presenting this paper at @SIGIRConf on Tuesday during the 15:30-17:00 session (Machine Learning 2). Come and check it out!
Check out Chuan's cool work on proactive 🔎 in convos Presentation tomorrow morning #SIGIR2025 👇🏼
I’ll present our full paper "Bridging the Gap: From Ad-hoc to Proactive Search in Conversations" tomorrow (16 July) at @SIGIRConf #SIGIR2025, in the Conversational IR and Intelligent Agents session, MANTEGNA Platea, Floor 1, 10:30–12:30. Paper: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/37…
Team University of Sheffield @sheffielduni at #SIGIR2025 in Padova!. @SheffieldNLP @InfoSchoolSheff Great to be here with @nikaletras @drmarkstevenson @MengdieChmod777 and Reem Bin-Hezam.
Third (and last) day of the 2025 Lectures on Computational Linguistics! Tutorial by @zhengyuan_nlp and Lab by @ERC_LiLa (Giovanni Moretti, Federica Iurescia, Eleonora Litta) #NLProc
A very warm welcome to @zhengyuan_nlp, who recently joined our group as a Senior Lecturer! sheffield.ac.uk/cs/news/warm-w…
Happy to announce our journal paper on tongue twisters, Train and Constrain (TwistList 2.0), has now been officially published in @CompLingJournal! (Thanks to @chenghua_lin and Chen Tang) direct.mit.edu/coli/article/5… @sltcdt #nlp #nlproc #nlg
After a series of reading groups focusing on reasoning — CoT, to CoT or not CoT, symbolicCoT, today our @Xingwei__Tan presented his recent paper about “Enhancing Logical Reasoning in LMs via Symbolically-Guided Monte Carlo Process Supervision” in our @SheffieldNLP reading group.
Multi-step reasoning #LLMs are often fine-tuned on trajectories that are filtered with process reward models (PRMs) automatically trained on Monte Carlo estimation-generated pseudo labels.
New paper "Predicting retracted research: a dataset and machine learning approaches" rdcu.be/eqrgY with @afletcher53 TLDR: ML can support identification of potentially problematic research
Can LLMs detect when a question is built on a false premise, especially when it’s hidden in a reasoning step? Not really! We introduce MultiHoax, a benchmark of multi-hop false-premise questions By the brilliant MohammadAmin & HamidReza arxiv.org/abs/2506.00264 #ACL2025 Findings
Super excited to have a cool post-doc lined up for after my PhD, working on Uncertainty Quantification with @NafiseSadat at @SheffieldNLP, and @benbenhh and @inuikentaro from RIKEN, Japan. Could not be happier 🙂
1 week left to secure your place at our annual #conference! Join us on 23 June in sunny #Sheffield to hear about our #PhD students’ #AI and #ML #speech and #NLProc research! Cool keynote speakers too! Check out our website for more info! slt-cdt.sheffield.ac.uk/annual-confere…
Congratulations to @EdwardGowSmith on passing his #PhD #viva with minor corrections! Huge thanks to his supervisor @AlineVillav and his viva examiners Professor Dr Hinrich Schütze (@LMU_Muenchen) and @NafiseSadat (University of Sheffield)!
It was such a nice coincidence having our @SheffieldNLP Away Day on my name day (21/5)! Glad to be doing research in one of the largest NLP labs in the UK, if not Europe. Also grateful to have the Peak District right at Sheffield's doorstep, especially on such a sunny May day!
Great day out in the Peaks for the @SheffieldNLP Research Away Day just outside Sheffield! 🚍☕🌲 Inspiring talks, thoughtful discussions, and plenty of time to connect. Thanks to all who joined and made it special!🌺
