Shabana Mahmood MP
@ShabanaMahmood
Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice | Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood
An honour to welcome legal sector leaders to No. 10. Our legal services underpin justice, power our economy, project British excellence abroad and keep the UK a top destination for doing business. Long may that story continue.
Last week, Lord Chancellor @ShabanaMahmood and Minister @SarahSackman KC MP welcomed legal sector leaders to Downing Street. They celebrated the work being done to drive innovation and growth across the UK and acknowledged the legal sector as a key pillar of the justice system.
With prisons close to bursting, I’m clear we shouldn’t be giving bed and board to foreign criminals with no right to be here. These changes will get more of them on planes out of the country much sooner, saving taxpayers’ money and keeping our streets safe.

Great to welcome the Secretary of State for Justice @ShabanaMahmood, to Pitch 2 Progress this afternoon. Our youth leaders and ambassadors proudly gave her a tour of the site and shared powerful stories about their journeys and the impact P2P has had on their lives.
Intensive Supervision Courts are being rolled out to tackle prolific offending, offering treatment and close monitoring for offenders with issues like addiction, and punishments including prison for those who don’t comply. @JamesTCobbler spoke to @BBCNews on why they work.

An honour to have celebrated the extraordinary life and legacy of Ozzy Osbourne just weeks ago. Devastated to hear the news of his death today. One of the greatest gifts my city gave the world. My thoughts are with his family. In Ozzy’s own words: Birmingham forever.

A pleasure to meet @SeanFraserMP, my Canadian counterpart today. A fascinating conversation about our two legal systems, the challenges we have faced, and what we can learn from each other. We had much in common, if not our height...

A pleasure to meet @EUCssrMcGrath to discuss civil & criminal judicial cooperation for the benefit of our citizens, our commitment to the rule of law & supporting Ukraine. A strong UK-EU alliance is vital to address global challenges. I look forward to working together.

Today, I welcome Sir Brian's report and thank him for his work. We will now consider all his recommendations and will respond, in full, ahead of legislating in the Autumn. I will do whatever it takes to bring down the backlog and deliver swifter justice for victims.

The Shadow Lord Chancellor needs to focus a little more on his day job, and a little less on the job he’s after…
The Tories think we can just 3D print new judges and barristers overnight. It's no wonder they left our justice system in chaos after 14 years.
