Senator Angus King

News from the office of Independent U.S. Senator Angus King of Maine. Following/retweeting does not equal an endorsement.
The National Park Service is already underfunded and understaffed. To put its budget on the chopping block as we continue to see a rise in visitors at parks across the county is reckless and thoughtless. It's the worst idea for "America's Best Idea."
Our global reach doing good in other countries is what makes our nation great, but slashing USAID and downgrading the State Department gives power to China and Russia. Now, our military will have to take on the added responsibility of acting as diplomats in critical regions.
Requiring the Interior Secretary to personally review every wind and solar permit proposal won't help lower energy prices or supercharge our power supply. It's short-sighted, inefficient bureaucracy that will stall American energy. Read more here ➡️ sen.gov/X98VL

Every Maine person deserves access to drinking water without worrying about dangerous toxins. This spring, I introduced a bipartisan bill to address PFAS in water systems and private wells, and protect Americans from dangerous "forever chemicals." washingtonpost.com/health/2025/07…
Maine has been battling Lyme disease for decades. By reauthorizing the bipartisan Kay Hagan Tick Act, we can keep fighting this disease by funding critical research & testing. It’s one small way we can work together to keep Maine people safe & healthy. wagmtv.com/2025/07/16/mai…
From the March on Washington to crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge to the House of Representatives, John Lewis’ fight for civil rights embodied the best of our nation. Today, we honor his legacy by getting into #GoodTrouble & continuing his work toward a more just, equal society.

Three years ago, Congress came together on a bipartisan basis to create a three-digit crisis hotline. Today, the #988Lifeline has helped save lives by guiding Maine people through mental health emergencies. If you need help, support is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988.

The annual National Defense Authorization Act makes important investments that enables Maine people and businesses to play a critical role in the safety and security of our nation. Get the full story from the Times Record ➡️ sen.gov/7YLX6

The "power of the purse" is granted solely to Congress in the Constitution. However, we're handing over our own power as we continue to allow the Executive Branch to substitute its agenda for Congress' role. It's dangerous and sets a harmful precedent for our nation's future.
"When the legislative and executive powers are united in the same person or body...there can be no liberty..." - James Madison, Federalist Papers 47 I'm on my way to the floor to speak on the rescissions package and the further abdication of Congress' power. Tune in if you can!
When the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence, they made a promise to fight for our nation's freedom and pursue a more perfect union. On#IndependenceDay, we celebrate their courage & recommit to upholding the values of our democracy. Happy 4th of July, Maine!

Never have so many been so grievously hurt in the service of so few.

This bill is literally taking food out of the mouths of children to give tax breaks to millionaires. It's wrong and it's immoral. I'm urging all my colleagues to vote no so we can start over and work together to deliver a responsible, bipartisan spending bill.
Ahead of the overnight votes, I wanted to share my worries for Maine with this bill: ⚕️ ~60K people without health insurance 🍎 ~30K people losing all or part of their SNAP benefits 📈 3T+ added to the U.S. debt ➕ So much more This bill isn't just irresponsible, it's cruel.
My statement on today’s vote in support of Senator Kaine’s War Powers Resolution:

Looking out for one another is what we do best here in Maine — my friend and Lewiston native Patrick Dempsey agrees. Join us in communicating the impact of potential cuts to MaineCare by sharing your own health care stories at [email protected]. 💌
You don't need to be a real doctor to know the disastrous impacts of cutting MaineCare (Medicaid). Just ask Maine native Patrick Dempsey — though you might know him as Dr. Shepherd on TV. 😉 Share how these cuts will impact you or your family at [email protected].
On June 19, 1865, the last slaves in Galveston, Texas rejoiced as they received word of their freedom. 160 years later, we recognize #Juneteenth as a celebration of their strength, resiliency and dreams, and recommit ourselves to working toward a more just and fair society.
Renaming military bases away from confederate soldiers’ names wasn't to erase history, it was to acknowledge our mistakes as we pursue a "more perfect union." And that decision had strong bipartisan support in 2020. It's insulting the Administration is now working to overturn it.

Today wasn’t about a U.S. Senator, it was about an American citizen asking questions of their government and being met with force. My friend Alex Padilla — and every American — has the first amendment right to free speech. wmtw.com/article/alex-p…
