While we continue to promote the principles of the PEN Charter here – together with @pen_int and fellow PEN International chapters – we know some writers and readers would be more comfortable following us elsewhere. You can do that now. (Image (c) Richard Smith/isleofskye.com)

Israel announced this morning that they will now murder anyone they see fishing or swimming. "Entry to the sea is prohibited" This is after they forced the population to live on the beach.
Continued - it has now been confirmed that 46 people have been arrested in Parliament Square for holding cardboard signs, with news of arrests coming in from Manchester and threats of arrest in Cardiff (Caerdydd). News of solitary actions occurring elsewhere without arrest!
BREAKING - ~40 ARRESTS IN PARLIAMENT SQ. Over 300 police officers have been seen to carry away dozens of people from the foot of statues of Nelson Mandela and Gandhi for alleged “terrorism offences”. Those arrested are accused of holding signs in support of Palestine Action
Well, I did for many years but alas virtually very few others in the Western media did
The nauseating thing, @JakeWSimons and those like him don't care about people suffering in other conflicts. That suffering only has a purpose to deflect from the Western-facilitated crimes being committed against Palestinians. All they reveal is their own moral bankruptcy.
There is no question that Yemen's war has been hideous, with so much suffering. There's no question the West is guilty of war crimes. As I wrote about over and over again. If @JakeWSimons accepts this, then he must accept Gaza is a much graver crime. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
The level of destruction Gaza has been subjected to is without precedent in our age. The rate of killing is the worst since the Rwandan Genocide of 1994. And crucially this is being facilitated BY OWN GOVERNMENTS - that is, it's being done in our name.
Gaza is subjected to a genocidal onslaught: Israel's leaders and officials have made clear they see no demarcation between the civilian population and legitimate military targets. A much higher proportion of its population has been killed, more quickly, than Yemen.
Yemen has suffered hideous damage during its civil war and foreign intervention. But it was not reduced to the total apocalyptic ruin of Gaza. If most Yemenis died from indirect causes in that war - what do you think will be the case in Gaza?
Crucially, most of those killed in Yemen died of indirect causes. It is indirect causes that kill most in episodes of extreme violence. But note that The Economist estimated up to 109,000 VIOLENT deaths in Gaza alone.
The UN estimated 102,000 Yemenis suffered violent deaths by 2020. But: 1) That was over 5 years, not 19 months. 2) Yemen's population is 17 TIMES BIGGER than Gaza. 3) Although the Western-backed Saudi coalition committed many crimes, other forces did the killing, too.
As The Economist - which backed Israel's onslaught - estimated, up to 109,000 Palestinians have suffered violent deaths in Gaza. Those figures are 3 months out of date. Those exclude indirect deaths.
1) I spoke out about Yemen for years - more than any other British columnist. 2) I even did a documentary about Yemen: theguardian.com/world/video/20… 3) My government is facilitating a genocide in Gaza. There is no greater crime than that. And this is much worse than Yemen.
The silence of Owen Jones on any conflict other than that involving Israel 🤔
Palestinian refugee camps in the northern West Bank are being depopulated. Jenin, Tulkarem, Nur Shams: “All three camps are now off-limits. Soldiers shoot at anyone who tries to return.”
⚡️BREAKING: 5 freed prisoners who had been deported by Israel to the Gaza Strip were martyred after Israeli forces bombed the tents in Sanabel camp in Al-Mawasi, west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The martyrs are: ➤ Naji Ubayyat – from Bethlehem ➤ Mahmoud Abu Sariya – from…
