Just finished a lecture on the importance of #wetlands as a natural climate solution so I put together this slide. Really makes you realise how wetlands have been vilified over the years (and countless other examples from literature too) - great films though!

I have really loved the #PeatTwitter community that we developed over here and I am really sad it is ending. However, I can't in good faith keep using this platform so I am going to stop using this account from today. You can find me over at 🔵☁️

🚨17-18 Feb 2025 at The Royal Society, London (in-person & online) Explore African peatlands' ecology, biodiversity, and climate significance. Discover the world’s largest tropical peatland complex in the Congo Basin and discuss its future More info: royalsociety.org/science-events…
📢Exciting paper "Salt marsh litter decomposition varies more by litter type than by extent of sea-level inundation". nature.com/articles/s4324… Root functional type is a key control of organic matter decay, inundation duration has only a slight effect - with a MEGA marsh organ!
If you are attending the @BritishEcolSoc Annual Meeting this year - we are hosting a joint social with the @BES_Palaeo SIG at the Ship and Mitre in Liverpool from 7:30pm on Wed 11 Dec. This will be an evening of drinks, snacks and a quiz! Would love to see you there!

Thrilled to see the first paper from my postdoc online! Here was asked a simple question: what happens to methane in canals draining tropical peatlands? Turns out, lots of it is consumed by methanotrophs! @stanforddoerr @ykan_id @UntanPontianak nature.com/articles/s4146…
Not retweeting to avoid a pile-on but this isn't cool is it? 14x the exact same editorial in multiple journals. Sure, call it a "call to action" but I'm not convinced that legitimises this.
What a beautiful frosty morning in Kauhaneva–Pohjankangas National Park, Finland 📸: member of the public as part of the Tracking the Colour of #Peatlands project #PeatTwitter #PeatColours

Out doing peat depths in the eastern Sperrins and finally got to see one of the best bits of bog in the country, incredible pool systems! @UlsterWildlife @IUCNpeat #sperrins #peatlands #bog
PDRA1 will join my carbon biogeochemistry group, and lead efforts to establish the current and future physical capacity of land in the case study regions to contribute to net zero, and prioritise areas for peatland restoration. Full details here - jobs.ac.uk/job/DKM406/int… 2/2
I am a bit behind and realized EGU abstract submission is open! If you're interested in Pollution in Peatlands submit an abstract to our session. If you work on any pollutant (natural or human) in peatlands we want to hear about your work! meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU25/sessionp…
Slowly but surely more #peatland and #wetland people are moving over to the Blue place! Would love to see more join!
Fire increases soil moisture losses but accelerates vegetation water uptake—and leaves ecosystems containing plants with less control of their water content. Great global analysis using remote sensing data and led by PhD student @MartinJBaur
Article: Fire affects the hydrological interactions between soil and vegetation, leading to faster soil moisture loss and accelerated vegetation water uptake @MartinJBaur @eco_pelle nature.com/articles/s4156…
