My new paper (essay?) explores how labor market institutions may affect not just unemployment & wages... -but also productivity & growth, -especially in Europe (vs. the US). -Potential channel: "dynamism." Based on my talk and paper at the ECB Forum on Central Banking in Sintra.
Examining how labor market institutions and rigidities continue to shape European competitiveness and unemployment, from @Schoefer_B nber.org/papers/w33975

Very excited that our paper (joint with Jarkko Harju and @Schoefer_B) on "Voice at Work" is published in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics. We study what happened when workers in Finnish firms got a right to worker voice on the corporate board. @AEAjournals 👇
EP can affect dynamism for businesses and workers, ultimately affecting misallocation, R&D, innovation, and investment. One interesting channel: making it hard to fire also makes it risky to venture into new business areas, increasing risks of innovating. 7/
@Schoefer_B presented work on labor mkts. Is the EU model of employment protection (EP) at odds with innovation? EU characterized by high EP: low risk of losing a job (y axis below), but also low chances of finding one when one ends up unemployed (x axis). 5/
Photo from the second edition of the GEP Labour and Globalisation Workshop last week. Featuring keynote presentations by @Schoefer_B and @alexandraroulet the event brings together young scholars from prestigious institutions for two days of presentations and lively discussions.
Looking forward to my session at the @SEDmeeting tomorrow and learning from other talks! I will present joint work with the excellent trio of @alexclymo, Yusuf Mercan and @Schoefer_B. Main result: novel, efficiency-based motive for unemployment insurance. When jobs differ not…
Highly relevant! "Eurosclerosis at 40: Labor Market Institutions, Dynamism, and European Competitiveness" by Benjamin Schoefer. "This paper repositions Europe’s labor market institutions as drivers of the transatlantic gap in macroeconomic performance." ecb.europa.eu/pub/pdf/sintra…

Thanks a lot to my German-speaking colleagues for another insightful discussion. This time we focused on monetary policy, the international role of the euro, capital markets union and - for the first time - stablecoins.
Looking forward to having Shifrah Aron-Dine at Berkeley starting July, and to learning a lot from her!
