Senator Schuyler VanValkenburg
@ScVanValkenburg
Senator for the 16th District. Parent of three pretty cool kids, teacher of the Constitution, Democrat, and #Henrico homer.
📻What Virginians are hearing in Hampton Roads: "Affordability and growth are the key words headlining Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger’s plans." @SpanbergerForVA is ready to lower costs for Virginia families and put Virginia's economy first. whro.org/virginia-gover…
Yesterday I announced my Growing Virginia Plan — an economic agenda focused on growing Virginia’s workforce, business investment, and trade opportunities. As the Trump Administration continues to attack Virginia’s workforce and drive up costs, Virginia needs a leader…
We need an AG that prioritizes people over party. That means defending Virginian workers from the Trump Admin ANd focusing on cost of living instead of culture wars. We need to elect @jonesjay! He has the right values and priorities!
In Virginia, the average renter comes up 50% short of affording an apartment for their family without being rent-burdened. @JasonMiyaresVA has failed to hold price-gouging landlords accountable. As AG, I’ll fight to make housing more affordable. nlihc.org/sites/default/…
If localities continue to refuse to build housing we are going to see young people, young families, and our workforce and businesses flee. Do we want the average price of a home to be out of reach for all but the affluent? That’s where we are heading.
The disappointing part of this plan and why we need state housing policy is they rejected 3000 housing units for data centers. That means continued skyrocketing housing prices for the region and higher utility bills for working people. Why not mixed use?richmond.com/news/local/bus…

Our Governor vetoed a bill that @DelegateCallsen and I carried to do just this. The more solar we can get online where everyone (except our Governor) agrees it should go, the better. This thread on utility reform more broadly is also important and a needed conversation.
First, I’ll cut through needless red tape to install community solar projects on state properties, capped landfills, and brownfield sites right away. Solar is the cheapest source of electricity and the fastest to build – rapid installation will reduce utility prices immediately.…
My view: if even year elections (1) better represent people (2) lessen the power of special interests and (3) encourage the executive to focus more on governing and less on national politics we should make the transition. And if they don’t, we shouldn’t.
So, why consider switching Virginia to even-year elections? “How are we best amplifying people’s voices and how are we ensuring we have good government?” VanValkenburg added.

NEW from me: Would moving Virginia's elections to even years have federal impacts? Maybe, but #valeg Democrats say that's not why they're looking into the idea @ScVanValkenburg @ssurovell wvtf.org/news/2025-07-2…

.@ScVanValkenburg: 2 things we should care about: maximizing ppl’s voices, but also governing “When you have broader electorate, you weaken special interest power” Expanding Gov terms mentioned Cc: @VApoliticalmeme “Govs focus on national instead of governing Va bc 1 term”
This is good.
Thrilled to announce today @RepScottPeters, @RepBlakeMoore, @brianschatz, & @Jim_Banks are reintroducing the bipartisan Build More Housing Near Transit Act! The bill protects taxpayers & transit riders alike from federal transit grants to cities that ban housing near transit👇
Our unemployment rate has risen for six straight months. The last time this happened was the Great Recession of 2008. We need a Governor who will fight back against the Trump Admin and focus on building our economy and making life more affordable. We need @SpanbergerForVA!
Over 500 people came to The Cultural Arts Center to hear @BetoORourke speak yesterday! It was a good call to arms; rallying people across the region to get @SpanbergerForVA, the statewide ticket and @VAHouseDems elected this November so we can move Virginia and America forward!

🇺🇸Love this answer. It’s all about giving people a fair shot and getting things done that improve their communities and allow them and their kids to live the American Dream🇺🇸
Virginians are tired of the chaos coming out of Washington. They’re ready for a Governor who’s focused on getting things done.
🚨The BBB is going to raise people’s health care costs. From the Youngkin Admin itself: “hundreds of thousands of Virginians…could see monthly bills next year jump by 30% to 50%, said Keven Patchett, director of the Virginia Health Benefit Exchange.”🚨 richmond.com/news/state-reg…
Mr. Mt Zion, Mr. Varina, Mr. Henrico, my guy @revtyronenelson, Happy 20th anniversary pastoring Six Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Tyrone has a heart of gold and has done so much to make Henrico and RVA a better place. Can’t think of a better way to end the week than to celebrate him!

New newsletter: HOW THE HOUSING MARKET FOR YOUNG PEOPLE BECAME A 'TOTAL DISASTER' In 1991, the median age of first-time homebuyers was 28. Now it’s 38. This is the hardest time for young people (defined, generously, up to 40) to buy their first home in modern history. The…
Stopped by the @MayforVA office to knock some doors and get some campaign swag! Let’s win this seat and ensure that we have a General Assembly that focuses on kitchen table issues and protecting a woman’s right to choose.

I love @fgbrewing! They are a pillar of Lakeside and Tony and Jessica are some of the nicest people around. I repped them in the @VaHouse and was really excited to present them with a resolution recognizing them for all their achievements! I got a new hat while I was there!
