Excited to share Iβll be joining the University of Utah as an Assistant Professor in Atmospheric Sciences and the @WilkesCenter in Jan 2026! My research group will use ML and data-driven modeling π₯οΈπ to tackle air quality π«οΈ, fires π₯, and climate extremes π @UUtah @UofUATMOS

Need high resolution daily air pollution data for India? We've got you. Great new work led by Ayako Kawano developing satellite+ML-based measures of PM2.5 going back decades, and using it to evaluate recent progress in improving air quality. science.org/doi/full/10.11β¦
Really cool/important work led by Tina. Showing that NOAA HMS smoke detections are much less reliable outside of the western US (even though this data is used to attribute health effects of smoke everywhere in USA)
In our new @IJWildlandFire paper, we evaluated the use of NOAA's Hazard Mapping System (HMS) smoke product in #AirQuality and #PublicHealth analyses of fire π₯-related smoke π¨. π§΅
Does prescribed burning reduce overall smoke from wildfire? We have 2 new papers that try to quantify this. Answer: each acre Rx burned generates at least 3x more reduction in future wildfire smoke than is emitted in the Rx burn. But can take years to realize benefits. 1/ π§΅
Excited to share my latest work in ES&T Letters @EnvSciTech! We find that US air pollution monitoring network lacks adequate coverage, leaving millions of people unprotected under the stricter 2024 PM2.5 standard. With @joshapte and @MarshallJulian pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acβ¦
π¨Navigating the academic job market can be brutal! We've tried to create a comprehensive guide for applying to Tenure-Track Asst. Prof positions based on our recent experiences π Check it out: docs.google.com/document/d/106β¦ Thx πto @TheRealPyroTina @minghao_qiu @dien_wu
Our new paper in @NatMachIntell tells a story about how, and why, ML methods for solving PDEs do not work as well as advertised. We find that two reproducibility issues are widespread. As a result, we conclude that ML-for-PDE solving has reached overly optimistic conclusions.
**job alert** Postdoc position available to work with Prof. John Lin here at UUtah ATMOS: utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/170496
The average NEPA impact statement takes 4.5 years to complete. That's ridiculous. Here's a list of things that took less time to BUILD than it takes to complete a 575 page impact statement... 1. Golden Gate Bridge - 4 years, 4.5 months
The environmental review process is fundamentally broken.

Supreme Court halts EPAβs [air pollution] 'Good Neighbor Plan'. This decision unfortunately shows that the Supreme Court believes "significant economic and operational harm" is worse than "public health harm". Quite a backwards ruling... npr.org/2024/06/27/nx-β¦

In the 1980s prescribed or controlled fire was used for agriculture, brush management, and timber understory maintenance. It was a tool to reduce fuel buildup by maintaining productive forests and reducing brushlands in California. There was a decline in the use of prescribedβ¦
