Both high and low reliance groups have arrived through migration policies that were supposed to make the public finances more sustainable; a clear majority of working age households in the Indian, Chinese, Bangladeshi, and Black groups are headed by someone born overseas.
You'd need to account for the historical aberration of post-war collectivism which is now pretty integrated into huge chunks of the national psyche.
It's so weird because if you look at our history, those aren't particularly our values. Wouldn't it go more like 1. mercantilism 2. nation over tribe, individual over nation 3. eccentricity as innovation 4. fairness (allocated according to point 2) 5. football?
As with the rest of Britain, this experience might well be why they're now less welcoming.
