It was great to see @NIH take a real step toward non-animal methods this week — but it’s just the beginning. Its announcement only covers part of our Research Modernization NOW plan. There’s still much more to do to shift the paradigm. Let's take a look at where we stand. 🧵

When I appointed my dog Smoky as an affiliate at the NYU Wild Animal Welfare Program, I did that partly to celebrate Smoky, but I also did it partly to express the same point expressed below: Nonhuman animals can be attuned to each others' welfare in ways that we can easily miss.
Evidence suggests animals detect and respond not just to immediate emotions, but to long-term welfare states—raising key questions: Does poor housing alter social/sexual attractiveness by reshaping cognition, physiology, or anatomy? 6/
