In 1969, Dr. Samuel DeWitt Proctor was appointed as the Martin Luther King Distinguished Professor of Education. He was the first African-American faculty member at both the GSE and Rutgers to have an endowed professorship named for him. Read more: proctor.gse.rutgers.edu/content/about-…

Recognize this place? After the Rutgers Board of Governors changed our school's name to the Graduate School of Education in 1960, we moved into our new and current home. In 1963, faculty and staff moved into the new GSE building on 10 Seminary Place.

In 1928, the School of Education (the GSE's former name) conferred its first degree. By the following year, we enrolled 5,378 students in 71 courses—the school's enrollment doubled from there throughout the following decade! By 1931, we conferred our first Ed.D. degree.
