1. He wasn’t the president. 2. The photographers were already in the buffer area, just on the other side. The designated press wrangler is stopping them from becoming an additional security issue (such as by blocking the stairs or jumping on stage for a better angle).
The President of the United States get shot at a live event, and seconds later. A small team of photographers get whisked beneath the stage co-ordinated by a man in a suit. Yeah alright dude 😆
Legislation by @SenatorSlotkin would require immigration enforcement officers to display clearly visible identification and prohibit face coverings. She says federal agents have made "arrests that look more like kidnappings in an authoritarian country." michiganadvance.com/briefs/slotkin…
Today marks ten years since we got the call that my uncle had gone missing. A lot has changed in those ten years. Some things haven’t.

If summer nights seem a little brighter in Michigan this year, you’re not imagining it. Favorable weather conditions in recent years have led to an explosion of firefly activity. My first feature-length broadcast story: wkar.org/wkar-news/2025…
Michigan school districts represented in Congress by Democrats stand to be hit hardest as the White House withholds $6.2 billion of funding for school programs nationwide. Made some visuals showing which congressional districts are most affected: michiganadvance.com/2025/07/11/det…
The U.S. House voted 216-213 to claw back $8 billion in already approved foreign aid and $1.1 billion in already approved public media funding. There are currently three vacancies in the U.S. House, all of which are seats that were held by Democrats who died in office.
New: I teamed up with @elenalingshao and @nytgraphics to map more than 100 public TV and radio stations that are at risk of closing as a result of tonight's vote: nytimes.com/interactive/20… This is a time bomb that will go off in the fall, when the last federal grants run out.
By a partisan 216-213 vote, the House approved President Trump's request to pull back $8B in foreign aid and all $1.1B set aside for NPR, PBS and their stations for the next 2 yrs. Congress has now unraveled its role in public media stretching back more than a half-century.

The Michigan Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments next month on whether the state’s anti-hazing law is unconstitutional. An attorney says the law violates the First Amendment by referencing specific groups, like fraternities and sports teams. wkar.org/wkar-news/2025…
Michigan’s National Weather Service offices are beset by vacancies. Experts and some lawmakers see now as an especially inopportune time to be downsizing the department. Full story in today’s @detroitnews detroitnews.com/story/news/loc…
Independent gubernatorial candidate @MikeEDuggan is calling for a new law to suspend the salaries of state legislators if a budget isn’t adopted by the July 1 deadline after the split #MILeg failed to pass one last week. “If you don’t do your job, you don’t get paid,” he says.
Pleasantly surprised that James Gunn’s #Superman is also an unexpectedly great journalism movie. “You have to say ‘off the record’ beforehand, not after.”
James Gunn has made an earnest and faithful #Superman movie. It lacks some of the style and heart of the Guardians of the Galaxy films and The Suicide Squad/Peacemaker, but it's not surprising Gunn would play it a bit more safe dealing with the most iconic character of all time.
Michigan Gov. @GretchenWhitmer was on Gaydar last week. @GovWhitmer says she went to see “Oh, Mary!” on Broadway, jokes that MLM stands for “Midwest Lesbian Mom,” and lists @Chasten Buttigieg before adding @PeteButtigieg when asked to name LGBTQ celebrities.
“I find it ironic that America declared its independence from the U.K. via the Boston Tea Party, and here I am with a tea business, similarly frustrated with our federal government,” Chengdu Teahouse owner Elyse Ribbons said. wkar.org/wkar-news/2025…
Saw lots of these and similar flyers explaining how ranked choice voting works when I was in New York last month. There was a stack of these ones that people could take at the New York Public Library.
NYC's ranked choice mayoral primary seems to show voters better understood the process over time. - 2021's final count had 140k inactive ballots out of 942k votes (~15%), meaning ppl who didn't rank all candidates - 2025's final had 53K inactive ballots out of 1.02M votes (~5%)
Detroit is officially getting a WNBA team in 2029. While the team hasn’t been given a name yet, some options were discussed during the Mackinac Policy Conference last month:
Panelists discussing Detroit's bid for a WNBA team at #MPC25 were asked what they would name the team. Swin Cash-Canal: Shocks Grant Hill: Spirits Sandy Pierce: Pistonettes Arn Tellem: Supremes
Not the biggest part of the story, but still worth noting that the method The White House chose to announce an act of war is by screenshotting a post on the social media platform owned by the president.

Bridget Brink, a former ambassador to Ukraine who is now running for Congress as a Democrat in Rep. Tom Barrett’s district, says her campaign has raised more than $250,000 in its first 24 hours.
