Calder Rivers Trust
@RiverCalder
We are your local rivers trust, working hard to improve rivers and waterways in Calderdale, Kirklees, and Wakefield.
Last week we held our Summer Catchment Partnership Meeting—bringing together partners across the Calder Catchment to share updates, ideas & inspiration. Huge thanks to our speakers & all involved in driving collaborative action for nature & communities! 🌿 #CaBA

Look at this amazing before & after from one of our Himalayan balsam control sites! We've been pulling it since 2023 and last month, we arrived to no balsam! It's so rewarding to see our efforts pay off, especially at what we believe is the most upstream site on this watercourse!

As of today, Yorkshire Water have imposed a hosepipe ban accross the county. Reservoir levels have only decreased since January after the driest spring on record. Find out more about the hosepipe ban and what it means for you here: zurl.co/edkIH

Anglers! 🎣 Did you know about the Anglers National Line Recycling Scheme? It's easy—drop your old lines at a local bin or post them in. Bins in the Calder catchment: 📍Walton Hall Fly Fishery, WF2 6PW 📍Calder Angling Supplies, HD6 3DW See more: zurl.co/fcLPz
Our Farm Advice Team are out testing soil for aeration potential - aiming to boost flood & drought resilience. Using tools like moisture meters & compaction tests, they can offer tailored land management advice. Want to know more? Email: [email protected]

It’s #NationalInsectWeek! Insects are essential to ecosystems - pollinating plants, breaking down organic matter, enriching soil & feeding birds, fish & mammals. Enjoy these pictures from a recent site visit, there were signs of insect life everywhere you looked!🐝 🐜 🐛

Meet Paige, our new Head of Natural Capital! With a strong background in conservation & rivers trust work, she’ll lead efforts to understand, protect & restore natural assets across the catchment as part of the CCaLL Landscape Recovery Project and beyond.

We're thrilled to have completed this pond & wetland project in the Upper Calder! Working with the landowner & a wetland engineer, we’ve daylighted a land drain to create wetland habitat, improve flood and drought resilience, and tackle diffuse agricultural pollution.

Come and find us at Todmorden Agricultural Show this weekend! We will be there all day to talk about all things land management, water friendly farming, and funding. 📍Riverside Centre, Todmorden, OL14 6UH 📅 Sunday 15th June ⏰ 10am - 4pm

This Open Farm Sunday (8th June) we will be talking about the valuable work done by famers and landowners in our catchment to support flood/drought resilience and biodiversity at Langfield Farm, Todmorden. Find an Open Farm Sunday event near you: zurl.co/Oxw11
We've been planting hedgerows with farmers & landowners—this one’s thriving 18 months on! Hedges support wildlife, store carbon, slow water flow & boost climate resilience. More from Woodland Trust: zurl.co/gBS8E Leeds Uni on carbon & hedges: zurl.co/YUxvf

Don't be fooled by the rain we have welcomed in the last few days - Yorkshire has experienced it's driest spring since 1871 receiving just 0.5% of average rainfall for this time of year, resulting in reservoir stocks 22% lower than expected. See more: zurl.co/ZQ9jS

This week is INNS week!🌱 🦞 Invasive Non-Native Species like Himalayan balsam, Japanese knotweed, and signal crayfish threaten our native wildlife, damage riverbanks, and disrupt ecosystems. Download INNS mapper here and start reporting your sightings: zurl.co/gEmKG

We had the pleasure of celebrating the hard work of all involved in the @UniofYork ECOMIX project at Merchant Adventurer's Hall in York. It was great to meet other volunteers and organisations involved in the project and see some initial findings from the 12 months of sampling.

Skip the mower this month with #NoMowMay! Leaving your lawn alone helps early-season pollinators like bees and butterflies find food when they need it most, providing a haven for the wildlife in your garden. Find out more here: zurl.co/cQtEi
