Veteran 1B/OF Dom Smith is exercising his out clause with the New York Yankees, a source tells ESPN. Smith has been at AAA and had a big May, hitting .317/.389/.622 with seven home runs. He is now a free agent.
The biggest disconnect between minor league numbers and major league right now is the OBP. He's a career 380+ guy in the minors and 315 so far. He's also missing maybe 30 points of babip based on his batted ball profile. If he can get to a 350 OBP, he has a lot more value.
The Rays just optioned a guy hitting .285 with the 3rd most steals in baseball...
