I have many people to thank for helping this book make it into the world-prime among them @fdelond & @rosiehardinguk for wonderful PhD supervision some moons ago, @smullallylaw & my @IrishCentreHR @UniofGalwayLaw colleagues, & @uniofgalway @NUIMerrionSq for Open Access support.
My new book ✏️ Human Rights and the Care of Older People is just published (!) and can be ordered in hardback or read for free as an Open Access title here global.oup.com/academic/produ… I discuss some of its key arguments on the @IrishCentreHR blog today: ichrgalway.org/2024/05/16/hum…
Important article by @Age_Matters esp ending of Covid nursing homes group whose recommendations are ‘well behind the proposed timelines with alarming lack of political, popular or media concern, with virtually all targets of substance unachieved’ irishtimes.com/opinion/2022/0…
Like others, am extremely disturbed by the revelations in the RTE Investigates programme last week. Just flagging our new book due out in August.. its now so timely.

Seems timely to repost this analysis of nursing home ownership by Nick O'Neill
How much should nursing homes be owned by profit-driven investment funds? rte.ie/brainstorm/202…
Super interview with Ailbhe Smyth on the Brendan O'Connor show this morning. Such a strong & articulate woman. Congrats Ailbhe on all your hard work & passionate activism over those dark years.
Just in from Sat am Park Run in Irishtown. Such a fabulous gathering of supportive & motivated people of all age groups. A quintessential community experience. Big shout out to the volunteers who each week give of their time so generously.
We are delighted to announce BGS President @adamgordon1978 has been awarded an MBE in #KingsBirthdayHonours for his services to Older People's Healthcare. Adam is a leading expert in #GeriatricMedicine recognised for his @Age_and_Ageing research. bgs.org.uk/policy-and-med…
Could we have the elections, European or otherwise, on a Sunday, like many other countries in Europe, not to disrupt children going to school and to allow people travel if they need to, to vote without taking time off work??
Fab weekend playing for Connacht in Super Seniors InterPro Tennis comp. Played Munster in monsoon cons on Monday saturated from head to toe. Proud of my West of Ireland roots. Big shout out & huge thanks 2 Lansdowne tennis club 4 hosting great event. Everything ran so smoothly.

I have just submitted our new book 'A Practice Guide on Human Rights & Dementia' to Jessica Kingsley. Big shout out to Fiona Kelly & Helen Rochford Brennan co authors for their super collaboration & to Murna Downs & Ellen Griffith 4 commissioning this work.
Interested in Upfront programme tonight on older peoples services. The reality is many family carers are exhausted & not getting the support they need. The response from Senator FOL ' come & talk to me after the show' is disgraceful. These problems are systemic not individual.
Interested to learn today that in Oz people with YOD qualify for myriad of services under new National Disability Insurance Scheme. Also how dementia is seen as a chronic disease for GP care. GPs not allowed prescribe cholinestetase inhibitors but can prescribe anti psychotics!
Highly energised & hugely informed after lunch time seminar today on Rights & Dementia hosted by Sydney Dementia Network & convened by Dr Lee Fay Low. Thanks to great audience for their most valuable contributions. Big thanks to Prof Brendan McCormack.
Big thanks to Prof Karen Healy & Dr AnneLouise McCawley 4 organizing seminar I gave recently on Human Rights & Dementia at University of Queensland. Very excited about our trip down 2 Sydney now & the lunchtime seminar I will give there this coming Tuesday.
Roadtrip Brisbane to Sydney in Campervan yay! So impressed with Oz & its road safety promotion. Signage like "Stop Revive Survive" & "Reduce Speed every Mile Counts" also "Driver Reviver"with 24 hour roadside cafés. Love the positive public messaging!
Delighted to be part of this thought provoking seminar today on policy perspectives in Dementia hosted by my colleagues mariaFPierce@ucd & @ cesrd_nuig. Great panel discussion covering illness trajectory ably chaired by Prof Eamon O'Shea with in put from key experts. Big thanks

Excellent radio interview now with Prof Cormican re excessive restrictions imposed during Covid19 especially ban on NH visits. The human rights analysis is so important especially the resident's right to see their relatives Thank you for sharing such positive helpful insights.
I wrote a piece for the Sunday Business Post today about the way that the State handles litigation.
Just been listening to Ray Darcy talking about someone 'living with' dementia. Great to know that at least some broadcasters have stopped using words like 'sufferer' and are now using more inclusive language to depict the person who has the condition.
As always you are right. Sadly, however, there is no evidence that taking B12 or any other individual vitamin supplements improves cognition in population studies. There is considerable evidence that it doesn't (see WHO and Lancet commission 2020).
