People who spend their careers writing NIH grants are the literal opposite of grifters. It is a soul-sucking, brutal process. The scientists don’t get rich when they get funded. Their salary doesn’t change. They do it for science. For patients. You know, to make 🇺🇸healthy.
Should not be a flat rate, but in inverse proportion to institution endowment. This is going to tank and decimate so many institutions and labs. Especially since it seems there is no increase to number of grants or grant size.
Last year, $9B of the $35B that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted for research was used for administrative overhead, what is known as “indirect costs.” Today, NIH lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government to 15%, above…
1) Since there is a lot of confusion about the reduction of the overhead rate on NIH grants to 15% (see here: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/n…) I'll do a little tweetorial (or X-torial?) about it.
